ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell gymnastics team opened its home season by scoring a season-best 192.050 and
Sydney Beers captured first place among vaulters on Sunday afternoon at Newman Arena. Cornell couldn't keep up with a strong LIU team that posted a 195.025 - just .025 off its school record - to finish off the first of four consecutive home weekends for the Big Red.
Beers closed out the Big Red's vault rotation with a 9.775 to finish first among the 12 gymnasts on the two teams. She also ranked fourth on floor (9.800) and fifth on beam (9.800). Other top five individual finishers on the afternoon included
Cami Whitaker and Michaela Defrancisco with 9.600's on vault (tied for fifth) and
Regina Walton (third, 9.825) on beam.
Cornell was outstanding on beam with its 48.775, with all five scorers at 9.675 or better and two over 9.8.
LIU's Mara Titarsolej scored 9.950 on bars to highlight the meet, with Ilka Juk's 9.925 on beam not far behind. A trio of Sharks - Katy Koopman, Lauren Miller and Ella Barrington - led the way on floor with matching 9.875's to claim medalist honors.
Cornell welcomes Penn to Newman Arena on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 1 p.m. in a meet that will be streamed live on ESPN+.
