SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Cornell women's ice hockey team opened the ECAC Hockey slate with a 4-2 victory over the Union Garnet Chargers on Friday night from Messa Rink at Achilles Center. Cornell improved to 5-0-1, while the Garnet Chargers fell to 4-6-1.
Sophomore winger
Avi Adam threatened a hat-trick, netting two goals in the contest. Big Red goals leader
Katie Chan and junior center
Lily Delianedis also registered tallies. ECAC Hockey Forward of The Week
Izzy Daniel extended her point-streak, helping on two goals.
Both teams had a power-play advantage in the opening period. The Garnet Chargers held the first, which was killed off by the Big Red. Cornell was able to get five shots on the net during it's advantage but failed to find the back of the net, leaving the score untouched.
Moments later the Big Red would lose the puck in it's own zone resulting in two successive shots from Union with the second one going in putting the count at 1-0.
Katie Chan netted the puck seconds later during Cornell's second power-play of the period tying the game at 1-1.
The Garnet Chargers committed a costly turnover of the puck as time wound down in the first-period. Cornell collected the puck and skated down the ice leading to a shifty goal from sophomore forward Adam. The Big Red found itself leading 2-1 heading into the second stanza.
A costly sequence of back-to-back infractions put the Big Red in a 5 on 3 advantage.
Lily Delianedis and Adam (second of the night) stretched the lead to three, cashing in on the advantages. The Garnet Chargers refused to let up, as Stephanie Bourque struck from deep to clip the score to 4-2 late in the second.
Both goalies stood tall in the net in the final frame, with Cornell net-minder
Deanna Fraser saving all seven Garnet Charger attempts on goal, and Union goaltender Sophie Matsoukas having saved all eight Big Red shots on the net. Fraser moves to 2-0-0 between the pipes this year.
