TROY, N.Y. - The Cornell women's ice hockey team held on for a tight 2-1 victory over Rensselaer on Saturday night from Houston Field House. The Big Red complete the weekend sweep as they remain undefeated and move to 6-0-1. The Engineers drop to 6-3-3 on the year.
Katie Chan and
Izzy Daniel (short-handed) registered the Big Red goals on the night.
Ashley Messier and Daniel registered the helpers on Chan's goal. Daniel's game-winning-goal was unnassisted and short-handed.
Cornell dominated the shots on goal in the opening-period 11-1, but both squads failed to find the back of the net leaving the score tied at 0-0 after one.
RPI would close the gap in the second period as far as shot on the net are concerned, creating eight chances for themselves to Cornell's 13. Eight minutes into the frame, Messier and Daniel found themselves on a break and connected with Big Red goals leader Chan for the game's opening tally.
Six minutes into the third-period Chan committed a cross-check infraction, giving RPI the opportunity to knot the game up. Daniel stole the puck in the Engineer's zone and skated around defenders as she zipped down the ice for a short-handed goal.
In a late attempt to rally, RPI pulled their goaltender in hopes to cut the lead down. The Engineers proved successful in their empty net attempt, clipping the score to 2-1.
The Big Red pressure proved to be too much for the remainder of the game, as Cornell would hold off RPI and escaped with the victory.
Annelies Bergmann matched her career-high collecting 28 saves on the day and earned her second victory of the season.
