HANOVER, N.H. - The Cornell women's ice hockey team defeated the Dartmouth Big Green 4-2 at Thompson Arena on Saturday evening. The Big Red remains undeafeated as it moves to 10-0-1 on the season, while the Big Green dropped its record to 2-7-1.
Izzy Daniel,
Lily Delianedis, and
Ashley Messier registered goals for the Big Red.
Piper Grober (two), Daniel,
Katie Chan, Gabby Rud, and Delianedis earned helpers on those goals.
The opening period was stale-mate from both squads, with neither team being able to jump out to an advantage on the score board. Senior goaltender
Deanna Fraser collected four saves in the opening period.
Four minutes into the second stanza, Cornell had an opportunity to cash in on a Dartmouth penalty, but failed to find the back of the net. Seconds later, Grober would find Daniel who tipped in the puck to give the Cornellians a 1-0 lead.
A little over nine minutes later, Daniel had her stick on the puck again finding her long-time line-mate Delianedis on the opposite side on the net for a slap shot to increase the lead to two.
Halfway through the final period of play, captain Messier put in a clutch tally that in the moment seemed to be an insurance marker, but would turn out to be the game-winning-goal. Less than one minute later Daniel secured a three-point game when she scored a goal to extend the lead to four.
Izee Powell of the Big Green took advantage of a power-play opportunity with three minutes remaining in the game to break the shutout. Dartmouth forward Kenzie Bachelor would tack on another one with 17 seconds remaining during an empty net 6 on 4 situation to pull the game within two, but that would not be enough for a successful rally-attempt.
Fraser remains undefeated between the pipes after registering 15 saves on the evening. She moves to 3-0-0 for the season.
