UAlbany Defense Gets The Best of Women's Hoops in 57-45 Decision

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The UAlbany defense held Cornell in check most of the afternoon, limiting the Big Red to 26 percent shooting in collecting a 57-45 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Newman Arena. The Big Red slipped to 2-3, while the Great Danes pushed their record 4-1.

Freshmen Clarke Jackson and Rachel Kaus each scored a team-high eight points with Jackson adding seven rebounds to lead the Big Red, which scored just 14 points in the middle two quarters to put itself in too big a hole to recover from. The Cornell bench outscored the Great Danes' 25-3, but the visitors shot 42 percent overall and doubled up Cornell in 3-pointers made (6-3). Kaya Ingram and Vivenne Knee each posted seven points in the loss.

Helene Haegerstrand posted a game-high 17 points to lead three Great Danes in double figures, with Deja Evans adding 15 points and six rebounds and Lilly Phillips posting 10.

QUARTER ONE

  • The visiting team jumped out to a 4-0 lead before freshman Rachel Kaus subbed in less than three minutes into the first quarter and immediately made an impact, scoring on a layup at the 6:57 mark.
  • The team began trading baskets until a gritty three-point play by first-year Clarke Jackson got the Big Red its first lead of the day at 7-6.
  • A pair of Kaya Ingram free throws extended the lead before UAlbany answered with a three to knot the game at nine.
  • Ingram responded with a three on the next Cornell possession to pull ahead to 12-9, but the Great Danes closed the quarter on a 7-2 run to lead 16-14 at the end of one.

QUARTER TWO

  • Cornell was held to just 2-of-12 from the field in the second, while tallying a pair of free throws to put up six against UAlbany's 12 and trail 28-20 at the half.

QUARTER THREE

  • The third quarter saw more explosive play from the Great Danes. The visitors opened play on an 8-2 run, and would outscore the Big Red 22-8 in the quarter, leading by 22 at the end of three.

QUARTER FOUR

  • The Big Red outscored the Danes 17-7 in the fourth and used three late free throws to bring the deficit to 12, but UAlbany held on for a 57-45 point win.
