VESTAL, N.Y. -- A slow start from the Big Red turned into a career day for freshman
Rachel Kaus and a Big Red win as Cornell took down Binghamton, 58-57, at the Binghamton Event Center in Vestal, N.Y. Cornell improves to 3-4 (0-0 Ivy) while the Bearcats fell to 2-6 (0-0 America East).
Kaus's 20-point game paced all scorers on the floor. She became the second Big Red player to tally a 20+-point game this season after
Emily Pape did so at Western Kentucky. Kaus also added a two rebounds, an assist, and a steal in the outing.
Summer Parker-Hall, the only other Big Red athlete to hit double-digits with 12 points, led the team with a season-high 10 rebounds, marking the second Cornell double-double this season. Ingram, who net the tying layup in the final minute of action, had a team-high four assists.
Binghamton was led by Shannon O'Connor, who scored 14 on 6-for-7 shooting from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 behind the arc.Jadyn Weltz neared double-double territory for the Bearcats with her 10 points and eight rebounds. Weltz led the Bearcats with four assists.
FIRST QUARTER
- Binghamton capitalized on some early trips to the charity stripe to help power a 5-0 lead.
- Cornell was held scoreless through the first 6:10Â of play until Maya Watts hit one-of-two free throws to put the Big Red on the board.
- Watts had the first Cornell live action points of the game on the ensuing Big Red possession on a gritty put-back layup.
- The three points by Watts sparked a 7-0 Cornell to get the Big Red its first lead of the night.
- Back-and-forth play followed, leading to a 12-11 Binghamton lead after one.
SECOND QUARTER
- Cornell opened on a 6-0 run, but a deep-three and steal-and-score by the Bearcats knotted the game up at 17.
- Binghamton added four more before the media timeout, but again the break in play shifted the playing field with Summer-Parker hall dropping in a layup as the first points from the stoppage.
- The Big Red outscored the Bearcats 6-4 to bring up a 25-25 scoreline at half.
THIRD QUARTER
- Rachel Kaus hit her new career-high in points with her 14th point on a finger-tip lay-in at 6:43 remaining to tie the game at 31. She wont on to score or assist on the next three Big Red baskets.
- The Bearcats used back-to-back threes to take a 46-39 lead with 3:05 remaining to bring up a Cornell timeout.
- Points by Kaus, Clarke Jackson, and Vivienne Knee closed the quarter, making it a one-point Cornell deficit.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Kilgoe hit a long two to give the Big Red its biggest lead of the day so far at 53-48 with 5:15 remaining in the fourth, prompting a Binghamton timeout.
- Binghamton hit a three out of the break to cut it to a two-point game, and hit a second to retake the lead, 54-53, with 2:26 to go.
- The teams traded baskets to put the Bearcats up 56-55, leading to the home team burning the shot clock on the next possession.
- A late free throw put Binghamton up two, but Cornell had 15.8 seconds to get back in it.
- Kaya Ingram hit the layup, and push by Binghamton after the basket gave Azareya Kilgeoe the chance to put the game away at the line.
- She hit one-of-two, enough to give Cornell the lead. Summer Parker-Hall grabbed the rebound and was sent to the line by the Binghamton with an opportunity to make it a three-point game.
- Parker-Hall missed both, and the Bearcats got a timeout off with 2.0Â on the clock.
- Kaus was whistled for a foul with 1.7 remaining, putting Binghamton at the line. The Bearcats missed both shots, but got one last chance as the ball went out of bounds off Cornell at the baseline with 1.4 left.
- The inbound was clean but the Big Red defense held strong, closing out with the victory.
