Baseball Announces Newcomers, Schedule for 2024 Season

Big Red's 37-Game Slate Begins Feb. 23

ITHACA, N.Y. — Eleven newcomers will don a Cornell baseball jersey for the first time during the 2024 season as Dan Pepicelli, the Ted Thoren Head Coach of Cornell Baseball, released its 2024 roster and schedule on Wednesday morning.

"I am very excited about this class of newcomers," Pepicelli said. "They've done a great job filling a need and I am very impressed with their work ethic. I expect many of them to contribute right away." 

The 11 players compose of six pitchers, five infielders.

NEWCOMER BIOGRAPHIES (sorted in alphabetical order)
Graham Biben • RHP • 6-0 • 170 lbs. • New York, N.Y. • Riverdale Country School
• Played four years of baseball at Riverdale Country School in the Bronx, where he was a First Team All-League selection in his junior year where he set the single-season record for strikeouts while also leading team in home runs, ERA and WHIP
• Elected team captain in senior year, but did not play due to sustaining an injury while playing football
• Played club baseball with the East Coast Lumberjacks, which was ranked in the top 100 nationally.
• Two-time Perfect Game Preseason All-American honorable mention.
• Son of Matthew and Ellen Biben, and has two older siblings — both of whom have attended, or currently attend, Cornell.
• Mother, Ellen, swam at Wesleyan University from 1983-87.
• Brother, August, played baseball at Cornell from 2019-23.
• Father, Matthew, and grandfather also attended Cornell.

Owen Carlson • INF • 5-11 • 180 lbs. • Los Angeles, Calif. • Harvard-Westlake School
• Played four years of baseball at Harvard-Westlake School where he was a Second Team All-Mission League selection.
• Aided Harvard-Westlake to 2021 CIF Souther Section Division 1 Championship.
• Named an honorable mention in Perfect Game's Pre-Season All-American list for the California Region in 2023.
• Posted career batting average of .360, while starting in over 50 consecutive games at second base.
• Named USA Baseball's Player of the Day on June 16, 2021.
• Member of Spanish National Honor Society, named to Honor Roll, and was a student ambassador in high school.

Max Foster • RHP • 6-3 • 210 lbs. • Bethel, Conn. • Bethel HS
• Played three seasons of baseball at Bethel HS where he was a two-time First Team All-Conference selection and two-time First Team All-State selection.
• Named to All-Conference Academic team all three years, and was an Academic All-State honoree during senior year.
• Participated in CIAC Junior and Senior All-Star Games.
• Also played basketball for two seasons, earning All-Conference Academic honors during sophomore year.
• Named to Honor Roll in all four years in high school and was a member of National Honor Society.
• Played club baseball at Baseball U, and was selected to PBR Futures Game during sophomore year.
• Father, Mark, played baseball at Nichols College, and brother, Maverick, currently plays baseball at Mercer County CC.

Asher Gardy • RHP • Springfield, Va. • Lake Braddock Secondary School
Attended James Madison for his freshman year before transferring to Cornell ... earned two letters in baseball at Lake Braddock Secondary, where he guided team to a pair of district and regional championships in 2021 and 2022 ... also earned a letter in football ... member of National Honor Society and graduated with honors.

Kevin Hager • INF • 6-0 • 190 lbs. • Berkeley Heights, N.J. • Delbarton School
• Earned three letters in baseball at the Delbarton School, where he was a NJ Athletics Third Team All-State shortstop in his senior year.
• Named First Team All-Conference and team MVP as a senior.
• Honorable Mention All-Conference pick in his junior campaign.
• Selected for the New Jersey All-Star Game.
• Graduated from Delbarton School with high honors.
• Brother, Frank Jr., played baseball at Cornell for four years (2009-12) prior to serving as an assistant coach for seven years (2016-22).

Huxley Holcombe • LHP • 6-6 • 180 lbs. • Worcester, Mass. • Worcester Academy
• Received four letters in baseball, where he aided Worcester Academy to the 2023 CNEPSBL Championship.
• Was a two-time CNEPSBL All-Star and two-time CNEPSBL All-League selection in 2022 and 2023.
• Also received three letters in cross country, which included earning most improved in 2019 at Vermont Academy in Saxtons River, Vt.
• Lettered once in swimming, nordic skiing, and soccer.

Nathaniel Jennewein • LHP • 5-11 • 180 lbs. • Tampa, Fla. • T.R. Robinson HS
• Received four letters in baseball at T.R. Robinson HS, earning Team Pitcher of the Year honors in 2023.
• Named team captain for 2023 season.
• Participated in the Best of the Bay Showcase in 2022.
• Member of the National Honor Society and was club president of the Latin Honor Society.
• Lone brother, Paul, currently plays baseball at DePauw.

Luke Johnson • INF • 6-1 • 180 lbs. • Coto de Caza, Calif. • Santa Margarita Catholic HS
• Earned two letters in baseball at Santa Margarita Catholic HS, where the Eagles won the 2023 Trinity League and D1 CIF Regional Championship.
• Played in 2023 USA Baseball National HS Invitational.
• Named a preseason Perfect Game Underclass All-American.
• Received Academic Athlete and Lions Heart Golden Lion awards.
• Member of National Honor Society, and was four-time First Honor Roll student.
• Father, Craig, played collegiate tennis at Pepperdine before playing professionally from 1989-93 earning as ranking as high as No. 287 ... great-grandfather and great-grandmother (1929), great uncle (1956), grandfather (1957), grandmother (1958), and aunt (1986) are all Cornell graduates.

Jackson Marko • C • 5-10 • 175 lbs. • Syracuse, N.Y. • Christian Brothers Academy
• Played two years of baseball at Christian Brothers Academy where he was a sectional champion in 2021, along with earning two league titles in 2021 and 2022.
• Named team captain in 2022 and received the John P. Durkin Award for sportsmanship, leadership, and character.
• Member of National Honor Society and was awarded Distinguished Senior Award.
• Also member of Dean's List at Cornell.

Mark Quatrani • C/INF • 5-11 • 200 lbs. • Springfield, Pa. • The Haverford School
• Played four years of baseball at The Haverford School, where he aided program to 2022 Pennsylvania State Championship.
• Named MVP of league in 2023, while also earning team MVP honors in 2022 and 2023 and being named Best Catcher in Delaware County in those seasons.
• Received numerous honors, including being twice named to all league, All-Main Line, and All-Delaware County teams.
• Concluded career at Haverford with single-season batting average record (.569).
• Also served as a captain for two years.

Ethan Van Sice • RHP • 5-9 • 170 lbs. • Arlington, Va. • Gonzaga College [D.C.]
• Played four years of baseball at Gonzaga College in Washington, D.C.
• Aided program to 2022 WCAC Championship and was named to the 2023 All-WCAC Team.

CORNELL 2024 SCHEDULE OUTLOOK
Along with the updated roster, Cornell's 37-game schedule was released, which features 13 games scheduled to take place at Booth Field, the Big Red's brand-new off-campus facility that will enter its first full season as the home of Cornell baseball.

Cornell will begin the season with 12 road games, playing three-game series at Georgia Tech (Feb. 23-25), James Madison (March 1-3), Georgetown (March 9-10), and Richmond (March 15-17). The program's home opener is currently scheduled for a 3 p.m. contest against Binghamton on March 19.

Ivy League play will commence on Saturday, March 23, when the Big Red opens Ancient Eight play with a three-game series at Princeton. The first trio of conference home games will be March 30 when Cornell hosts Dartmouth.

Following a non-conference contest against crosstown rival Ithaca on April 1, Cornell will welcome Harvard on April 6-7 before heading to Penn on April 13-14. The first of two trips to Binghamton with 6:30 p.m. starts is scheduled for April 16 before returning to Vestal on two weeks later on April 30.

Rounding out Cornell's Ivy League schedule includes a six-game homestand against Yale (April 20-21) and Columbia (April 27-28) before heading to Brown on May 4-5 to conclude the regular season.
