Another Season High As Gymnastics Claims Big Red Invitational

2/12/2023 4:35:00 PM

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell gymnastics team boosted its season-best score by more than a point and a half in claiming the Big Red Invitational title on Sunday afternoon at Newman Arena. The Big Red's 193.475 surpassed Brockport (192.625), Ithaca (190.375) and Cortland (188.800).

For the first time in 2023, the Big Red didn't count a fall and its final score showed. The team's 193.475 was its highest score since 2018 and ranks among the top 20 in school history. It also was the third-highest score ever by the Big Red at its home invitational. The Big Red won on  both beam (48.625) and floor (48.800) while finishing no worse than second on any event in the four-team field.

Sydney Beers won the all-around (38.900), tied for first on floor (9.825) and grabbed second on vault (9.800) to lead the Big Red individuals, with Alexandra Quiana's 9.850 on beam good enough to win the event and tie for the fifth-best mark in school history.

The Big Red's 48.400 included six gymnasts registering a 9.625 or better and was the second consecutive weekend with a top 20 single meet score in school history (48.900 last weekend vs. Penn). Cornell also went 48.725 on beam and 48.400 on vault.

Cornell completes its four consecutive home meets when it welcomes West Chester to Newman Arena on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 11 a.m. The dual will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
