Subramaniam Named Ivy League Player of the Year

Lai Earns First Team All-Ivy Honors Prior to CSA National Championships

ITHACA, N.Y. — After becoming the first Cornell women's squash player to win the Ivy League Player of the Year last season, senior Sivasangari Subramaniam was unanimously named the Ivy League Player of the Year for a second consecutive season, the conference office announced Wednesday morning.

Despite not playing in the fall semester, Subramaniam recorded a perfect 9-0 record in the spring slate to extend her win streak to 27 games, which dates back to the 2019-20 season.

Along with being named Player of the Year, Subramaniam and junior Wen Li Lai were unanimously First Team All-Ivy team selections. It was the second consecutive season that both Subramaniam and Li were unanimous selections to the All-Ivy First Team.

Senior Sydney Bednar was Cornell's representative on the All-Ivy Academic Team.

National Championship Preview

The No. 6-ranked Cornell women's squash team will open play at the College Squash Association National Championships in Philadelphia on Friday at 12:30 p.m. against No. 3-ranked Princeton in the first round of the Howe Cup, the top of four national championship divisions.

Regardless of the result of Friday's match, the Big Red will play Columbia or Harvard at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Cornell is appearing in the Howe Cup for the first time since the 2017-18 season when the Big Red ended the regular season as the No. 8-ranked team.

In the other quarterfinals that will also take place Friday includes top-ranked Trinity and No. 8 Yale, No. 2 Harvard and No. 7 Columbia, and No. 4 Drexel and No. 5 Virginia.

Scouting Princeton

Cornell and Princeton played on Jan. 15 in Princeton, N.J., in which the Tigers posted a 7-2 victory. Subramaniam and Lai each recorded four-game victories at the top two positions for the Big Red.

Princeton enters this weekend's national championship with a 9-2 overall record and a 4-2 mark in Ivy League play. The Tigers are currently on a four-match win streak, defeating Yale, Penn, Virginia, and Chatham.

Last weekend, the Tigers dropped two just games in its pair of victories over Virginia and Chatham. In its 9-0 win over Chatham, Princeton recorded seven three-game sweeps.
