Women's Lax Moves To 3-0 With 13-9 Win At Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Ellie Horner had 13 of her career-high 16 saves in the second half as the Cornell women's lacrosse team remained unbeaten with a 13-9 win over California on Saturday afternoon at California Memorial Stadium. The Big Red opened its two-game West Coast swing by capturing its second road win while dropping the Bears to 1-4.

Horner's big second half came as Cal tried in vain to get back in the contest.  Cornell scored the game's first three goals and never trailed, but the home team surged in the fourth after falling behind 12-6 entering the final 15 minutes. Horner was up to the task, making seven saves to keep the Big Red well out in front.

Both Katie Castiello and Maggie Pons had three goals and an assist apiece, with Amanda Cramer adding two goals and an assist and Josie Vogel and Shannon Brazier tallying twice. Grace Faircloth had a team-best three ground balls and caused a turnover, with Marissa Stafford causing two miscues. Annie Thomas possessed five of Cornell's nine draw wins, becoming the fourth player in school history to reach 140 career draws in the process.

Cal held a 17-9 edge at the draw circle and put 25 of its 31 shots on goal, with Mya Wang leading the way with a goal and three assists for four points. Both Maya Lawliss and Avery Hoeft had multi-point games with a goal and an assist each. Kennedy Goss recorded seven draws and Alicia Souliotis made 12 saves in goal.

The Big Red got out to a 3-0 start less than five minutes in and never saw its lead get within a single possession. It was 5-2 after one, 6-3 at the half and 12-6 entering the fourth after a six-goal third quarter for Cornell.
