EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Cornell fencing team picked up its biggest win in school history - and they don't get any bigger - with a victory over No. 1 Notre Dame as part of an 8-2 weekend at the Northwestern Duals at Ryan Fieldhouse. Cornell moved to 25-4 on the season heading into this weekend's Ivy League championship.
The Big Red picked itself up after an early loss to No. 13 Stanford on day one to win four straight - including a 16-11 triumph over the top-ranked Fighting Irish, the program's first-ever win over the No. 1 team in the country.
After suffering a narrow 14-13 loss to the Cardinal to kick off the day, the Big Red responded with consecutive victories over Incarnate Word (20-7), Denison (24-3), the Fighting Irish and Lawrence (25-2).
The Big Red dropped another 14-13 decision to kick off day two, this time to No. 6 Ohio State, but bounced back with a 15-12 victory over No. 11 Temple before posting dominant victories over Cleveland State (27-0), Wayne State (23-4) and Detrit Mercy (27-0).
All 16 fencers that competed for the Big Red posted a winning record during the 10 weekend bouts.
Cornell will host the Ivy League Fencing Round Robins on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 11-12 at Barton Hall.
