ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell women's basketball had three shooters hit double-digits, but Pennsylvania earned the win, 67-54, in large part due to a 23-point performance by Kayla Padilla, and a 21-point performance by Jordan Obi. Freshman
Emily Pape led Cornell's scoring effort with 12, followed by
Summer Parker-Hall and
Ania McNicholas, each with 11.
Parker-Hall was the first to score, cashing in a three just 35 seconds into the game, but Penn answered with a 9-0 run. Cornell got back within two at 9-7with 5:04 to go with more points from Parker-Hall and a jumper from Pape, but the Quakers extended their lead to nine by the end of the first quarter, leading 22-13.
Two pairs of free throws to open the second quarter would bring Cornell to within five, but the Quakers grew their lead to 12 with 3:17 remaining in the first half. Cornell had one more live-game bucket, an
Ania McNicholas jumper, plus three free throws to get the game back down to a single-digit deficit.
The Big Red tallied a 4-2 run out of the halftime break, but Penn built a 17-0 run that would allow its lead to grow to as many as 24 with 2:31 left in the third. Cornell was unable to counter, and went on to lost by 13 following eight late game points by Pape.
