ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell gymnastics team nearly matched or surpassed season high team scores on three events, but a tough day on bars prevented the Big Red from topping Ivy League foe Penn in a dual meet on Sunday afternoon at Newman Arena. The Quakers posted a 195.250 to easily outdistance itself from Cornell, which scored a 191.025.
Sydney Beers captured the floor title with a 9.900, matching the fifth-highest score in school history, and was second on vault (9.825) to lead the Big Red. Both
Mikayla Burton and
Regina Walton tied for second on beam with matching 9.800's.
Along with Beers at 9.900 on floor, all five scoring gymnasts posting a 9.725 or better as the home team outscored the visitors in the event.
Cornell scored 48.225 or better on three events, including a season-high 48.900 on floor, but its 45.450 on bars kept it from hitting a season-high team score for the third straight outing.
The Big Red will continue its home stand when it hosts the Cornell Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. at Newman Arena. Cornell will welcome Ithaca College, Brockport and SUNY Cortland to the quad meet that will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
