Third Quarter Surge Lifts Binghamton Over Women's Lacrosse, 13-12

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Binghamton women's lacrosse scored six third quarter goals and rallied from a halftime deficit to claim a 13-12 victory over Cornell on Wednesday evening at Schoellkopf Field. The Bearcats improved to 6-5, while the Big Red slipped to 5-2 with the loss.

Abigail Carroll scored five goals and assisted on a sixth and both Marisa Tancredi and Hayley Weltner registered hat tricks as the visitors earned the program's first-ever victory over Cornell after nine previous meetings ended in losses. Carroll added six draw control wins. Binghamton held narrow edges in draw controls (15-14), shots (30-28) and ground balls (13-11). In goal, Emily Manning made four saves and picked up the win despite surrendering 12 Big Red goals.

Katie Castiello scored four goals to lead the Big Red, with Amanda Cramer posting two goals and an assist in the loss. Annie Thomas won eight draws for the Big Red, while Olivia Wall caused a turnover and won two ground balls. Thomas moved all the way to second place on the school's career draw control list with 148 and is just 11 shy of matching the record of 159 set by Sarah Hefner '15. In goal, Ellie Horner made four saves before giving way to Mackenzie Clark, who stopped two shots.

Binghamton raced out to 3-1 and 5-3 leads before the Big Red recovered to take a 7-6 edge with a 4-1 run to end the half with two goals apiece from both Josie Vogel and Casitello..The Big Red had a 6-1 edge at the draw circle in the second quarter to help the home team back in it.

The Bearcats soared back in the third, outscoring the Big Red 6-2 and needing just 2:16 to regain the lead. Carroll, who had two goals and an assist in the first half, registered a hat trick in the period 

Binghamton went up 13-10 with 13:21 to play in the fourth, its biggest lead of the day, but Cornell chipped away with a pair of scores in the next four minutes to get within 13-12. The Big Red had a handful of possessions in the final nine minutes, but wasn't able to get a shot on goal over that span.



 

Next Up

• The Big Red will continue non-conference play with a home contest against UConn on Saturday, March 18 at 1 p.m. at Schoellkopf Field.
• The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
• The two teams met for the first time in 2022 with the Huskies earning a 20-14 win in Storrs, Conn.
