FAIRFAX, Va. — George Mason posted victories of 10-5 and 4-3 over the Cornell baseball team in the first two games of a three-game series at Spuhler Field on Saturday.
The Patriots (10-8) recorded the first six runs of the opening game of the twinbill to coast to their five-run victory over Cornell (0-11).
Junior right-handed pitcher
Von Baker was the losing pitcher for the Big Red as he surrendered six hits and six runs in two-plus innings of work.
Freshman
Carson Mayfield recorded the bulk of the innings out of the bullpen, logging 5.1 innings of work where he scattered four runs on three hits, striking out five, while not walking any Patriot batters.
In the nightcap, Cornell and George Mason traded one-run innings throughout the contest, but a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth helped break a 3-3 tie, aiding the Patriots to the doubleheader sweep.
Senior left-hander
Spencer Edwards was saddled the loss in the nightcap after allowing runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
Freshman right-hander
Ethan Hamill had a stellar outing on the mound for Cornell, earning his first collegiate quality start. Hamill yielded two runs on seven hits over six innings, while issuing one walk and fanning three.
Game One Recap
George Mason jumped out to a 6-0 lead at the end of the third inning as the Patriots continually increased its run total in each of the first three frames.
Senior infielder
Joe Hollerbach cut the Big Red's deficit in half with a two-out, three-run home run in the fourth inning. Junior infielder
Matt Barnhorst reached on a fielding error by George Mason's left fielder and later scored thanks to a wild pitch and an RBI single by freshman infielder
TJ Swidorski.
The Patriots increased their lead to 8-4 with a two-out, two-run home run by Dykstra in the home-half of the fifth.
Swidorski drew a leadoff walk in the seventh, which proved to be costly for George Mason as a passed ball and a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt enabled him to reach third base before scoring on an RBI single by sophomore outfielder
Jakobi Davis.
A pair of insurance runs were added by George Mason in the bottom of the eighth to increase the Patriots' lead to 10-5.
