WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The Cornell gymnastics team claimed second of four teams in Session I of the Gymnastics East Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon at William & Mary's Kaplan Arena and placed sixth overall among the eight teams with a pair of individual top 10 efforts..
The Big Red sits second after the first session with four teams to compete in the evening, guaranteeing a top six finish. The Big Red's 193.000 was just behind the host school;s 193.050, but ahead of Bridgeport (192.800) and Southern Connecticut (192.525). The Big Red's 48.975 on floor was one of two events with a 48.450 or better, with beam also hitting that mark. The team's floor score was third overall at the championships.
Sydney Beers posted the highest floor score (9.850) of the first session and placed fifth overall, while her all-around score of 38.725 ranked fourth.
Mikayla Burton was second on beam (9.775) in the session and tied for seventh overall, with
Kate Michelini (38.250) posting the seventh-best all-around score..
The Big Red's top finisher on vault was Beers in 14th after recording a 9.675, with
Melanie Stone scoring a 9.575 on bars to claim 30th place.
Selected qualifying individuals will compete at the USAG Collegiate Nationals beginning on Thursday, April 6 at Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas.
