3/7/2023 10:00:00 AM

ITHACA, N.Y. - Cornell softball gears up to take a weekend trip to Baltimore, Maryland for the UMBC Tournament. The Big Red will take the diamond this weekend for a five-game slate against Merrimack, Morgan State, and UMBC. Friday and Saturday will each consist of double header games while Sunday will be a single contest.

Last Time Out
Cornell opened up the 2023 campaign in DeLand, Florida for matchups with Presbyterian, Stetson, and North Florida at the Stetson Classic. The Big Red split the first day of action, falling to undefeated Presbyterian and taking one against Stetson. The Big Red would drop it's remaining three games on the weekend against North Florida along with the second matchups versus Stetson and Presbyterian. Senior pitcher Mia Burd had a solid weekend, winning her lone game on the mound and registering a 1.56 ERA. Ella Harrod leads the team in runs with three, while Sydney Stapf's four RBI puts her ahead of the pack.

What To Watch
Keep an eye out for Burd who is coming off of a strong weekend on the mound for Cornell. Stapf, Harrod, and London Reagen are hitters to watch, as they played a part in a significant portion of the Big Red's point production in their last time out, accounting for six runs (two homers) and six RBI as a trio. Merrimack's Madison Cerpa comes into the weekend leading the squad in hits (six) and runs (three). Asia Thomas has been a pitcher's nightmare for Morgan State, hitting 12 pitches thrown at her (one home-run) while succesfully stealing six bases on eight attempts. Ashley Della-Gaurdia and Courtney Coopersmith will look to continue their early-season success as they protect their home diamond. Della-Gaurdia and Coopersmith combine for 12 runs, 17 hits and 11 RBI coming into the weekend for UMBC.
