CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The reigning National Intercollegiate Champions, Virginia, downed Cornell men's polo 18-7, on Thursday, April 13.
After the second chukker, Cornell trailed, 6-3, to the defending national champions.Virginia opened the third chukker on a 4-0 run that included a two-point goal from behind the 25-yard yard line. A Palacios penalty shot attempt in with 54 seconds to go went wide of the goal, leaving the final score at half at 10-3. UVA kept the momentum out of the break, scoring first in the fourth chukker while maintaining the shutout over the Big Red. The Cavaliers added another goal to open the fifth, but Benito Jaramillo stormed down the length of the arena to end the Cornell scoring drought and bring the deficit back to eight. Jaramillo continued the Cornell run in the fifth chukker, scoring an open-goal penalty shot, but Virginia's momentum continued with a goal and penalty shot to close out the chukker, 14-5. Virginia scored in the sixth chukker just 12 seconds in to expand its lead to double-digits.
Pablo Herrera net a goal through a scrum, but UVA expanded their lead back to 10. Cornell was credited its seventh point on an own goal by UVA, but the Cavaliers would end the match on a 4-0 run including a two-point open-goal penalty shot.
