Emma Baker helped guide the Cornell women's tennis team to its first Ivy League victory of the season, defeating Dartmouth, 4-1, on Sunday afteroon at the Reis Tennis Center.
Cornell improved to 5-14 overall on the year and is now 1-4 in Ancient Eight play. Dartmouth fell to 4-13 on the year and remains winless in Ivy League play with an 0-5 mark.
The freshmen tandem of
Gia Graziano and Baker opened the contest with a commanding 6-0 victory at No. 3 doubles. Mi and Stein fell in No. 2 doubles, 6-4, to Brooke Hess and Katie Weber, setting up the top doubles match to be the decisive match. Cornell's
Alexandra Savu and
Fatima El Ashram outlasted Dartmouth's Chidimma Okpara and Ashley Hess, winning in a tiebreak 7-6 (4).
In singles action, Stein gave Cornell a two-point advantage after she dropped just one point to Ashley Hess, 6-0, 6-1. Dartmouth's Ujvala Jupalli swept Savu, 6-3, 6-3, to post the Big Green's lone point of the day.
Like Stein, Baker also posted a straight-set victory while dropping just one point to Emily Zhou, 6-1, 6-0.
Mi solidified the victory for the Big Red when she defeated Okpara in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
El Ashram and freshman
Tanya Fan had their matches halted with the result of the contest already being determined.
Looking Ahead
Cornell plays its final two regular-season matches next weekend when it travels to southern New England to take on No. 69-ranked Brown and Yale. The match with Brown is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start, while the match against Yale is slated for a noon start.
