ITHACA, N.Y. — Brown used a pair of multi-run innings to defeat the Cornell baseball team, 5-2, at Hoy Field on Easter Sunday.
Charles Crawford went 1-for-2 with a triple and two RBI for the Bears, who improved to 7-17 on the year and 4-5 in Ivy League play. Mika Petersen was the lone Brown player with a multi-hit day, going 2-for-5.
Tobey McDonough shined on the mound for Brown, earning his first victory of the season. McDonough yielding one run on three hits over 5.2 innings while issuing two walks and striking out eight, matching his career high.
Jack Seppings earned his third save of the season and his second in as many games after firing 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.
Sam Kaplan was the only Big Red player with multiple hits as the senior right fielder went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple. Sophomore designated hitter
John Quinlan was the only other Cornell player with a hit.
Junior right-handed pitcher
Von Baker was the losing pitcher for Cornell (4-18, 3-6 Ivy) after he gave up three runs on two hits in 2.2 innings.
Brown took a 3-0 lead in the third as the Bears drew a pair of walks to open the frame. The walks set up Petersen for an RBI single. Logan Meusy drew a bases-loaded walk to increase Brown's lead before a wild pitch by Baker plated another run.
McDonough settled into a groove beginning in the bottom of the third when the senior right-hander struck out sophomore center fielder
Jakobi Davis. The strikeout was the first of six consecutive punchouts registered by McDonough, as he recorded all eight of his strikeouts against the next 10 Cornell batters.

Carson Mayfield and senior left-hander
Spencer Edwards were solid out of the bullpen for the Big Red, keeping Brown's hitter at bay for the remaining six-plus innings.
Mayfield inherited a bases-loaded situation with two outs in the third, but the first-year hurler evaded trouble by inducing a groundout to end the inning.
Shining once again on the mound, Mayfield gave up two runs on four hits across 4.2 innings. He did not walk any batters and struck out a pair.
Cornell scored its first run of the contest when Kaplan hit a two-out, opposite field RBI triple in the sixth.
The lead for Brown was extended to 5-1 in the seventh when Crawford hit a two-out, two-run triple to the right-center field gap.
In the eighth, the Big Red threatened as senior
Wils Guy drew a pinch-hit walk before advancing to third following a pair of wild pitches by Carter Rasmussen. Quinlan also walked to give Cornell runners at the corners with nobody out. Sophomore first basemen
Max Jensen hit into a sacrifice fly that allowed Guy to cross home plate and cut the deficit to 5-2.
Brown went to the bullpen again, bringing Seppings in and he was able to limit Cornell's bats by getting a fly out and a ground out to restrict the Big Red's rally attempt.
Game Notes
• Cornell and Brown played for the 135th time on Sunday. The Bears increased its win streak in Ithaca to nine games with the victory. Brown is 8-1 in its last nine against Cornell.
• Following his 4.2 innings of relief, Mayfield has solidified his in the Big Red's bullpen in Ivy League play as he has a 2.93 ERA and 0.86 WHIP over 15.1 innings pitched. Ancient Eight opponents are hitting just .175 off the first-year pitcher.
• Kaplan recorded his team-leading seventh multi-hit performance on Sunday. In the Big Red's nine Ivy League games, the senior outfielder is batting .314 with two doubles, a triple, a home run, and five RBI. He is one of four Cornell players with at least 20 at-bats to be hitting a .300 clip in conference play, joining senior infielder

• Waugh had his career-long six-game hit streak snapped on Sunday. Over his last seven contests, Waugh is batting at a .407 clip (11-of-27) with three doubles, three home runs, and 11 RBI.
Looking Ahead
Cornell will return to action on Tuesday when it travels south to Vestal, N.Y., to square off against Binghamton in the first of three non-conference contests between its Central New York rival.
First pitch between the Big Red and Bearcats from the Bearcats Baseball Complex is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Game action will be broadcast on ESPN+.
