ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's golf team played well at its Cornell Invitational held at the Watchung Valley Golf Club, finishing fifth overall.
The Big Red carded a combined 589 on the tournament over the two-day tournament, including knocking five strokes off its Sunday score (292) with a 287 on Monday.
Tyler Debusschere put in his best showing so far in a Big Red uniform, as the freshman rose from 24th with a 1-under 70 on Monday to finish tied for 12th in the final standings of the 36-hole tournament. Debusschere was not alone in the top 15 for the Big Red, as junior
Matt Simon carded an even-par 71 to finish in 15th place. Junior
Jackson Debusschere was the third Big Red golfer to finish inside the top 20, as he put in a 4-over 146 on the weekend to finish tied for 19th with Canisus' Ryan Edholm.Â
Freshman
Viktor Stollinger finished fourth in the rotation for Cornell, shooting a 5-over 147 over the two-day tournament to finish in a tie for 21st, and junior
Weston Warden had his best round of the invitational on Monday with a 1-over 72 to finish tied for 31st at 7-over.Â
Three individuals also competed for the Big Red on the weekend.
Char Russekoff shot his best round of the invitational on Monday with a 5-over 76 for a tie of 51st, while juniors
Tismark Boham and
Tyler Zimmer each had a 12-over 154 to finish tied for 56th.
Cornell also extends its streak of consecutive top-five finishes in the tournament it has hosted or co-hosted to four, dating back to its third-place finish in its Cornell Invitational on Sept. 14-15, 2019.
Siena took home the team trophy after finishing an impressive 10-under 558, 15 strokes ahead of second place Temple (573). Colgate (574) and Bucknell (578) finished ahead of the Big Red to round out the top five of the two-day tournament. Birdies by Alex Creamean and Hayden Quinn on the 18th hole pushed the Bison ahead of the Big Red, keeping them out of the top four.Â
Siena's Matt Ferrari was the medalist for the event, climbing the leaderboard with a tournament-low 4-under 67 on Monday to finish with a 6-under 136, three shots clear of Colgate's Kevin Hollomon.Â
The Big Red will head out to Plymouth Meeting, Pa. for the Temple Invitational hosted by the Owls at the 1912 Club on Sept 16-17. Cornell will look to best its fifth-place finish from a year ago in the tournament in a co-invitational hosted by the Big Red and Owls.Â
