NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Big Red wrapped up week one of the 2023-24 season with 12 wins across three days of competition at the Lion Invite. Cornell faced off against Ivy opponent Columbia, while also competing against VCU, Wagner, and LIU for the first time in program history.
Cornell opened the season with a complete sweep over Wagner at day one of the Lion Invite. The team posted three doubles victories, highlighted by
Emma Baker and
Gia Graziano, who blanked their opponent, 6-0. The Big Red followed up with six straight individual victories, four of which were won in two sets. In singles, Baker and
Tanya Fan each took down their opponent 6-0 in set two, sealing the No. 1 and No. 6 spot for the Big Red. Graziano and Michelle Rydin each battled back after dropping set one to win in three.
The Big Red faced off against Columbia on day two.
Tanya Fan took the lone Cornell win on the day with a defeat of Alexandra Torre, 6-4. Rydin forced a third set after opening with a 6-3 set one win, but ultimately fell to opponent Sophia Wang. Baker, Graziano, and
Lauren Stein each battled in their matches, avoiding being blanked in both sets.
In day three, the Big Red took on VCU, where Stein and
Victoria Zhao combined to win a doubles match. Zhao continued her personal success, securing a two-set win in singles. Stein, in her second appearance of the season, again avoided being blanked, battling in her first set to extra points at 7-6 (4).
The Big Red returns to the court on Friday, September 22, when it travels to West Point, N.Y. to compete at the Army West Point Invite.
