Box Score 3 WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Big Red had several wins at this weekend's West Point Invite, including a full sweep of the Flight A singles matches. In Flight B of the Open Singles, freshman Michelle Rydin earned the title, and both Big Red doubles teams in Flight A finished in the top-four.
The action started with a big opening day. Cornell advanced in all matches of Flight A and Flight B of the singles open at day one of the West Point Invite on Friday, September 22. Emma Stein defeated Elena Lobo Corral from Stony Brook in a 6-0, 6-2 score to advance to the round of 16, where she took on Olivia Wright of UConn. She defeated Wright 6-4, 6-4, to advance to tomorrow's quarterfinals.
Victoria Zhao took down Mia Palladino of Stony Brook 6-1, 6-3, to advance to the round of 16, where she faced off against Caterina Assi. Zhao advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
Jenny Wong bounced back in her opening match after dropping set one to Anastasia Sereda from Seton Hall, 7-5. Her 6-4 and 10-4 set wins sent her on to the round of 16, where she defeated Sandra Dzhambazov of NJIT in two sets, 6-3 and 6-1.
Emma Baker wrapped up the day for the Big Red with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 three-set win over Natalia Vela of Bryant. She the defeated Xiaowei Hu of Fordham 6-0, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals. In Flight B, Ryndin out lasted her opponent 6-4, 4-6, 10-5, in her round of 32 match and defeated Xintong Zhou of Fordham 6-0, 6-4. In Flight C, Martina Marcia lost to Irene Cocero of NJIT, 6-4, 6-2, while
Tanya Fan won her round of 32 match 6-1, 6-2, but dropped her second round match 6-0, 6-1. Rydin and Marcia lost in the round of 32 in Flight B of the Open Doubles to Anagha Shankar and Vera Sekerina of Quinnipiac. The Quinnipiac duo went on to win the flight.
Day two consisted of doubles play for the Big Red. Baker and Wong teamed up to take down both of their opponents, 6-2, and advance to the quarterfinals. Stein and Zhao made up the second Cornell pairing, defeating both of their opponents, 6-3, to also advance to the round of eight.
All Big Red athletes in the open singles Flight A won their quarterfinals matches to advance to the semifinals. The remainder of that bracket was declared a no contest due to all finalists, Stein, Zhao, Wong, and Baker being from Cornell. In Flight B, Rydin defeated Shivani Ingle in the quarterfinals 6-3, 6-2, Vennmukiil Mathivanan in the quarterfinals 6-2, 6-4, and outlasted Anlin Xie in the finals, 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 10-4 to win Flight B. Baker and Wong advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-2 victory, but dropped to Jenna Sabile and Julia Kelly of Army, 6-1. Zhao and Stein advanced all the way to the semifinals with 6-3 and 6-1 wins, but lost to Olivia Wright and Victoria Matos of UConn, 6-4.
The Big Red gets a week's rest ahead of the 2023 ITA Regionals. Regionals are set for Friday, October 6 through Sunday, October 8, held in New York, N.Y.
