BELGRADE, Serbia — USA representative Cornellian Vito Arujau won all four of his matches on Saturday, outscoring his opponents 40-4 while advancing to the finals of the 2023 World Wrestling Championships.
Arujau (USA), wrestling in the 61kg weight class, started his day with dominant 10-0 wins over Ossimzhan Dastanbek (Kazakhstan) in the qualifying round and Stilyan Iliev (Bulgaria) in the Round of 16. He beat Kodai Ogawa (Japan) 8-2 in the quarterfinal round and Taiyrbek Zhumashbek Uulu (Kyrgyzstan) in a 12-2 technical fall in the semifinal round. Arujau ended the last match on an 8-0 run, recording a takedown and three consecutive two-point turns.
Arujau, in his first-ever run at the Senior World Championships, will face Abasgadzhi Magomedov (independent) on Sunday at Stark Arena. Magomedov, predicted to win gold by FloWrestling, was the 2021 world champion at 61kg. An NCAA champion at 133 pounds last season, Arujau was predicted to win bronze.

Arujau's championship bout with Magomedov is slated for tomorrow at 12:00 noon. Kyle Dake '13 (USA) will begin wrestling tomorrow, and Ben Honis '19 (Italy) will hit the mats on Monday morning. Dake is the second seed at 74kg, while Honis is the fifth seed in the 97kg class. Dake, a four-time world freestyle champion and 2020 Bronze Olympian, will face Musa Evloev (independent). Honis is set to face Akhmed Tazhudinov.
