ITHACA, N.Y. — Eleven former Cornell men's hockey players are listed on NHL training camp rosters, as each of the 32 clubs announced it over the past week. Most team's training camps will begin on Thursday in preparation for the preseason slate, which opens this weekend.
Four players from last year's Big Red squad are on training camp rosters, including forward
Matt Stienburg and defenseman
Sam Malinski, who will both be at the Colorado Avalanche's camp. Forward
Ben Berard (Dallas) and defenseman
Travis Mitchell (N.Y. Islanders) are the other two recent graduates to attend training camps.
Six of the remaining seven Cornell hockey alumni all have NHL experience, as Anthony Angello (Nashville), Cole Bardreau (N.Y. Islanders), Riley Nash (N.Y. Rangers), Jacob MacDonald (San Jose), and Morgan Barron and Jeff Malott (Winnipeg) will partake in their respective team's training camps. Jeff Kubiak will also join Bardreau and Mitchell at Islanders training camp.
Angello is looking to appear in his first NHL game since 2021-22 after splitting time last year with the Springfield Falcons and the Milwaukee Admirals, both of the American Hockey League. In 62 contests, Angello registered 23 points (13 goals, 10 assists) while aiding the Admirals to its run to the Western Conference finals of the Calder Cup playoffs.
Bardreau has made 11 appearances in the NHL, all with the Islanders. He played in 10 games during the 2019-20 season and made his lone appearance last season against Nashville on Dec. 2. With the Islanders' AHL affiliate in Bridgeport last year, Bardreau posted a career-high 15 goals and 31 points, while his 16 assists were the most since 2017-18 when he had a 19-assist season with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
Nash is coming off a successful 2022-23 season in the AHL where he had recorded 59 points (24 goals and 35 assists) in 66 games with the Charlotte Checkers. All of Nash's scoring figures signify professional career highs for the 13-year veteran.
MacDonald will enter his fifth NHL season after spending time with Colorado before being traded to San Jose this past January. Over 58 appearances last year, MacDonald logged one goal and seven assists.
Barron is coming off a career year with Winnipeg, where he had a 21-point season (eight goals, 13 assists) in 70 appearances. His teammate, Malott, is also coming off a career year where he had a 44-point season (23 goals, 21 assists) in 71 contests with the Manitoba Moose, Winnipeg's AHL affiliate. Malott has netted 23 goals in his last two AHL seasons and is looking to increase his total of NHL games after making his lone NHL appearance against Chicago on March 20, 2022.
Kubiak seeks to make his NHL debut during the 2023-24 campaign as he has spent the previous seven years in the AHL with the Bridgeport Islanders. Last season, Kubiak accumulated 22 points (9 goals, 13 assists) in 72 games.
