ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell University senior and middle blocker on the Big Red volleyball team Sydney Moore was named one of Glamour Magazine's College Women of the Year, the magazine announced Tuesday.

The award honors female college athletes breaking barriers, setting new standards, and positively impacting their communities. Although a new award, Glamour has honored numerous women who have gone above and beyond over the past 60 years, including master chef Martha Stewart, 23-time Grand Slam women's singles winner Serena Williams, and four-time Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles.

Moore is one of six athletes distinguished with the honor, including LSU PF/SF Angel Reese, Arkansas hurdler Britton Williams, Florida gymnast Riley McCusker, Texas swimmer Lydia Jacoby, and Stanford golfer Rose Zhang.

"Being chosen as one of Glamour's College Women of the Year is a big deal to me for many reasons," Moore said. "I'm proud to represent my team, black women athletes, the Ivy League, and to be recognized for my contributions both on and off the court."

Moore has had a storied career for the Big Red. The senior was honored last September as one of the five Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award winners at the 2022 ESPY's, honoring both high school and college students who are using sports to facilitate change and a positive impact in the community and beyond. Moore is also co-president of the Women of Color Athletics (WOCA), founded in Spring 2020 to "provide women of color within Cornell Athletics a support network and space to share their experiences and stimulate the acceptance of cultural identities and celebrate the strength, brains, and uniqueness that empowers women of color in their pursuit of being both a successful student and athlete at the highest level."

But Moore's impact goes further than just on campus. Last March, the San Diego, Calif. native addressed members of Congress about NCAA reform, gender equity, and Title IX. She also led a panel discussion in the United States Capital Building to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the passage of Title IX legislation on behalf of Cornell and Voice In Sport, a global non-profit organization committed to advocating for girls and women in sports with research, education, and research. Moore was also recognized as the Student of the Year at the Black Student Athlete (BSA) Summit this past May at the University of Southern California.

Trudy Vande Berg, the Wendy Schaenen '79 Head Coach of Volleyball, says that Moore is a student-athlete everyone should strive to be.

"I am continually impressed by what Sydney accomplishes on a daily basis," Vande Berg said. "Her ability to balance school, volleyball and her passion projects is truly remarkable and makes her a great role model for younger student-athletes everywhere."

On the court, Moore has been a leader in front of the net for the Big Red. The senior has started in nine of ten matches this season and is fifth on the team with 39 kills. She has also dominated in the block department for the Big Red, as she is second on the team and sixth overall in the Ivy League with 40.0.

Moore and the Big Red take the court this weekend for two Ivy League matches against Dartmouth (Sept. 29 at 7 p.m.) and Harvard (Sept. 30 at 5 p.m.) at Newman Arena at Bartels Hall. Both games will also be streamed on ESPN+.
