BELGRADE, Serbia — Cornell women's rowing alumna Solveig Imsdahl '13 and her crewmate Elaine Tierney finished third in the medal race of the lightweight women's pair on Friday at the 2023 World Rowing Championships that are being held at the Ada Ciganlija Regatta course on Sava Lake.
Due to only three crews competing in the event, the third-place finishing American tandem did not receive a medal. The Italian pair of Elisa Grisoni and Serena Mossi won gold with a time of 8:33.13, while Eva Hohoff and Luise Munch of Germany finished in second with a time of 8:40.64 to earn silver. Imsdahl and Tierney completed the 2000-meter event with a time of 8:51.84.
The Americans opened the race with the lead, leading the Italians by 2.11 seconds before Italy took the lead for good during the second 500-meter stretch. After the first 1000 meters, the U.S. was in second place before the Germans surpassed the Americans around the 1250-meter mark.

After clinching its spot for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris next summer, Cornell heavyweight rowing alumni Michael Grady '19 will be the lone Cornellian to take the water on Saturday as the U.S. men's four attempts to earn a gold medal. Grady, along with Liam Corrigan, Nick Mead, and Justin Best, will be one of six American crews with medals on the line. The American quartet will face crews from the Netherlands, France, Great Britain, New Zealand, and Australia in the final that will take place at 8:54 a.m. ET (2:54 p.m. CEST).
In Thursday's semifinal action, the U.S. men's four posted the fastest time of any boat in the semifinals with its 6:25.99 time, finishing ahead of the Dutch crew by 2.49 seconds (6:28.48).
