PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- For the sixth time this season, Cornell women's basketball won the turnover battle, but the Big Red came up short in the Palestra, losing 67-54 to Penn. The Big Red now falls to 6-9 (0-3 Ivy), and Penn improved to 10-6 (2-1).
Cornell was led by captains
Kaya Ingram and
Summer Parker-Hall, who tallied 14 points each. Parker-Hall grabbed a team-high seven rebounds while Ingram dished out a team-high five assists.
Emily Pape,
Azareya Kilgoe, and
Vivienne Knee each tallied six points.
Penn had three double-digit scorers, including a 26-point performance from Stina Almqvist, a career-high for the junior. Jordan Obi followed with 14 points, and Lizzy Groetsch added 10. Mataya Galyle led all players with seven assists, while Obi, Almqvist, and Floor Toonders each tallied two blocks.
First Quarter
- A loose ball of the jump went Penn's way, and back-to-back turnovers by both teams ended with Penn at the free throw line. The Quakers' Lizzy Groetsch went one-of-two on her trip to give Penn the first point of the game.
- A three pointer from Jordan Obi gave the Quakers a 4-0 lead, but Pape got Cornell on the board on the following possession, rebounding her own shot and hitting the put-back layup. Parker-Hall knotted the game at four with a connection from Ingram, but a 6-2 Penn run followed to help the Quakers to a 10-4 lead after the media timeout.
- Back-to-back layups from forwards Pape and Kaus tied the game at 10 with 3:31 left in the first quarter. The Big Red wrapped the quarter outscoring the Quakers 4-2 with the help of a technical foul against Penn, sending Beam to the line to shoot two solo shots, both of which she sank.
Second Quarter
- Penn ended its field goal drought with a fast break layup to knot the game at 16. The Big Red held the Quakers to no field goals for 7:30 between the first and second quarters.
- Back-and-forth play ensued with each team having answers through the media timeout, with the game tied at 20. Penn came out of the timeout swinging with an 8-1 run over 2:54 of play. A layup from Parker-Hall and deep corner two-pointer from Vivienne Knee got the Big Red back within three, but a buzzer beater pull-up jumper by the Quakers gave Penn a 30-25 lead at half.
Third Quarter
- Ingram grabbed the first points of the second half on a driving layup and two scoreless Penn possessions pushed the Quakers to use an early timeout just 1:32 into the quarter. Ingram beat the shot clock on the next possession to get Cornell within one before Penn found its first points of the half at 7:24, sparking a 7-0 Quaker run to give Penn a 37-29 lead and force a Cornell timeout.
- Penn continued its momentum with a 6-3 run after the Big Red went 1-for-3 on two separate trips to the charity stripe. Clarke Jackson righted the ship with two made free throws to cut the deficit back to single digits. The two points were the first of a 6-1 run for the Big Red that included a steal-and-score by Vivienne Knee.
- Cornell tacked on two more before the end of the quarter to trail by seven at the break.
Fourth Quarter
- The Quakers held Cornell to just four points in the first 6:01 of action while scoring ten to build the lead to 58-45 before and Ingram jumper cut the deficit to 11. Penn responded with four unanswered points when and an-one from Azareya Kilgoe got Cornell the opportunity for a three-point play. Kilgoe capitalized, but the Quakers put the game away at the free throw line, making five of their final six attempts to keep the Big Red out of striking distance.
Big Red Notables
- Pape's double-digit scoring streak ended at seven games, the longest streak of her career and longest by any Big Red athlete since Theresa Grace Mbanefo had six in the 2021-22 season.
- Ingram tallied her eighth game in double figures this season.
- Knee recorded three steals in the contest, good for a new career-high.
