ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Big Red led at the end of the first three quarters, and maintained a lead for more than 23 minutes of action, but a 30-point fourth quarter by Brown helped the Bears to a 64-53 win over Cornell on Saturday afternoon in Newman Arena. Cornell fell to 6-10 (0-4 Ivy), while Brown improved to 12-5 (3-1 Ivy).
Two Big Red notched double figures, led by
Emily Pape with 13 points, five rebounds, three assists, and a steal.
Clarke Jackson tallied her second-career game in double figures, netting 11 points and accounting for three rebounds and an assist.
Vivienne Knee and
Summer Parker-Hall neared double-digit rebounding with nine and eight, respectively.
Grace Arnolie led all scorers with 25 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the field, including 6-of-12 from behind the arc. Kyla Jones (13), Ada Anamekwe (10), and Isabella Mauricio (10) each also tallied double digits for Brown. Anamekwe led the Bears with eight rebounds.
After 1:46 passed in the first quarter with no score
Summer Parker-Hall hit the opening basket on a layup and helped Cornell to lead the remainder of the first quarter. Back-to-back layups by Jackson, separated by a layup off a steal-and-score by Brown, pushed the Big Red's lead to eight twice. Cornell held on to a 13-10 lead to close the first quarter.
The Big Red maintained a lead until 7:16 remained in the second quarter when Mauricio hit her second three-pointer of the day to give Brown an 18-17 lead and cap off an 8-4 run. Cornell responded with an 8-4 run of its own to bring up a 25-22 Big Red lead. Four points off turnovers for the Bears gave Brown a one-point edge, but
Azareya Kilgoe hit a mid-range jumper to ensure Cornell led, 27-26, at the half.
Jackson opened the third quarter with her fourth basket of the afternoon, but back-and-forth play followed through the quarter, with Cornell maintaining a three-point edge after Pape hit a jumper with 50 seconds left and Brown missed two late free throws
A 14-8 run by Brown to open the fourth changed the tide, powering the Bears to a 58-45 lead. Cornell chipped the lead down to single-digits twice, but never let it get closer than a nine-point Big Red deficit.
