Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Special Teams Aids #8 Big Red's 5-3 Victory Over #12 Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. - The no. 8-ranked Cornell women's ice hockey team defeats the no. 12-ranked Princeton Tigers 5-3 at Hobey Baker Rink on Friday night. The Big Red moves to 14-5-1, while the Tigers fall to 12-6-3.

Karel Prefontaine, Gabbie Rud (short-handed), Rory Guilday, Piper Grober, and Izzy Daniel (empty-net) registered Big Red goals in the contest. Georgia Schiff, Grace Dwyer, Daniel (two), Kaitlin Jockims, Lily Delianedis, and Claudia Yu had helpers in the contest. Cornell stopped all six of the Tigers power-play opportunities.

Avi Adam was called for a hooking infraction early in the contest. Cornell stood tall, killing off the Tiger advantage. Moments after the kill, Prefontaine found the back of the net to give the Big Red a 1-0 lead. Cornell would get an opportunity to extend that lead when Sarah Fillier was called for a roughing, but would not take advantage. Gabbie Rud would put in the second tally of the game during a Princeton power-play to give Cornell a 2-0 lead.

A back and forth second period saw five goals between the two squads. Rory Guilday would net the puck in the third period to push the advantage to 3-0. Princeton netted two consecutive goals mid-way through the second stanza to chop their deficit to one. Grober would respond for Cornell taking the count to 4-2. The Tigers would find the back of the net during a Cornell advantage late in the frame to make the score 4-3.

The first-half of the final period proved to be a more defensive battle with neither team letting up. The Big Red committed a couple of untimely infractions with seven minutes to go, putting them on a crucial three on five penalty-kill. Shortly after, Kaitlin Jockims would find herself on a one versus one with the Princeton goalie only to be denied a short-handed tally. The Big Red would go on to kill off both of Princeton's power-plays.

With three minutes left, Cornell would shave off two minutes during a power-play advantage. A feisty Big Red squad staved off the Tigers six on five empty-net advantage which was book ended with Daniel's empty-netter with one second remaining.

Annelies Bergmann collected a career best 35 saves in the win between the pipes.
