HAMDEN, Conn. - The no. 8 Cornell women's ice hockey team took down the no. 6-ranked Quinnipiac Bobcats in a thrilling 4-3 contest on Saturday evening at M&T Bank Arena. The Big Red improved to 15-5-1 on the season, while the Bobcats dropped to 21-5-1.
Izzy Daniel,
Rory Guilday,
Mckenna Van Gelder, and
Gabbie Rud (GWG) registered Big Red goals on the evening. Guilday,
Grace Dwyer, Daniel,
Avi Adam (two),
Piper Grober, and
Lily Delianedis had helpers in the game.
Following three consecutive shots on the net, the puck found its way to NCAA points leader Daniel who found the back of the net for the first points of the game. The Big Red had an opportunity to add to the count in the first period when the Bobcats were called for a tripping penalty. Quinnipiac would kill-off the infraction and go on a power-play of their own shortly after. The Bobcats took advantage bringing the score to 1-1.
An intense start to the second period saw a back-and-forth battle with both offenses getting their chances and both defenses standing tall. The Bobcats committed a slashing penalty when the Big Red had a breakaway opportunity that was stopped by Angers. Cornell had its second power-play of the evening. The penalty was killed by Quinnipiac but with a stick-less Bobcat on the ice Guilday ripped one from deep to put the Big Red ahead 2-1.Â
The Big Red continued its strong offensive pressure to begin the third stanza. Van Gelder would capitalize during a delayed penalty six on five situation as the Big Red played tic-tac-toe en route to its third goal of the game. With just under three minutes left in the game, the Bobcats scored two goals in a six on five scenario to tie the game. With 50 seconds to go, Rud stole the puck from the Bobcats and put in the game-winning goal to give the Big Red a thrilling 4-3 regulation victory at M&T Bank Arena.
Annelies Bergmann collected 20 saves in the win. The Cornell defense played a strong second period, when Bergmann was only tasked with stopping two Bobcats shots.
