ITHACA, N.Y. -- In the teams' first-ever meeting, Cornell women's tennis topped Fordham, 6-1, in the opener for dual competition. The win marks the first time the Big Red has opened duals with a win since the 2016-17 season when Cornell swept Army, 7-0. The Big Red improved to 1-0 while Fordham fell to 0-1.
The Big Red set the stage with two quick doubles wins.
Emma Baker and
Lauren Stein combined for a 6-3 win in the No. 1 doubles match.
Alexandra Savu and
Michelle Ryndin followed up with a 6-4 victory in the No. 3 contest, giving Cornell the two doubles points and rendering the No. 2 match unfinished, though
Jenny Wong and
Victoria Zhao held a 5-3 at its conclusion.
Of the six singles matches, Cornell posted sweeps in three. Stein took a 6-0, 6-3 win in the No. 1 singles match, besting Raffaela Alhach. Baker followed in the No. 2 match with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Xiaowei Hu. Ryndin secured the final straight-set victory with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) win over Eleni Fasoula.
Gia Graziano battled in the No. 6 match to capture a 7-6 (8-6), 1-6, 11-9 win and improve the Cornell score to six.
Victoria Zhao dropped a 6-4, 7-5 decision in the No. 4 singles match.
Cornell returns to the court next week to host Niagara on Saturday, Jan. 27. Matches are set to begin at 11 a.m. in the Reis Tennis Center.
