Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell women's tennis has opened dual competition at 2-0 for the first time since the 2015-16 season after taking down Niagara, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon. The sweep keeps Cornell perfect all-time against the Purple Eagles, winning all five meetings, 7-0.
Jenny Wong and Martina Marisa began the day with a 6-0 sweep in double, defeating Niagara's Valeria Mora Alvarez and Mercedes Velasco Mencos.
Michelle Ryndin and
Alexandra Savu followed with a 6-3 victory over Coral Rodriguez and Maria Melo to earn the Big Red the doubles' points and suspend the third match. Though
Emma Baker and
Lauren Stein's match went down as unfinished, the duo held a 5-2 edge before the match was called.
In singles play, Ryndin posted a perfect game over Coral Rodriguez in the No. 2 match, needing just 51 minutes to go 6-0, 6-0. Baker (and Wong followed suit, posting wins in 57 minutes each. Baker won 6-0, 6-1 over Maria Elena Mayet in the No. 1 match, and Wong took down Jaida Borg 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 3 match.
Alexandra Savu was next, posting a 6-2, 6-2 win over Larisa Kotok in the No. 4 match.
Tanya Fan topped Enrica Favaron in the No. 6 match, 6-3, 6-2 to nearly finalize the sweep.
Gia Graziano put away the final match in a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) thriller to complete the Big Reds perfect win.
Cornell is back to the courts tomorrow when it travels up to Syracuse. Matches are set to begin at 11 a.m. at the Drumlins Country Club.
