ITHACA, N.Y. - The Cornell women's ice hockey team capped the weekend with a 3-1 victory over the no. 10-ranked St. Lawrence Saints at Lynah Rink on Saturday evening. The Big Red improved to 13-3-1, while the Saints dropped to 13-8-0.
Grace Dwyer,
Karel Prefontaine, and
Georgia Schiff registered Big Red goals in the game.
Izzy Daniel and
Lily Delianedis collected helpers on Prefontaine's goal, while the other two were unassisted.
The Saints outshot the Big Red 14-4 in the opening period of play, but it was the Big Red who found themselves on top 1-0 at the intermission. Dwyer skated the length of the ice, swerving around St. Lawrence defenders to ultimately find the back of the net to give Cornell the lead.
The Big Red would tighten up its defense in the second, holding the Saints to five opportunities on the net. Cornell extended the lead to two when Daniel and Delianedis found their newest linemate Prefontaine streaking far side for the tally. Saints forward Anna Segedi responded three minutes later during a power-play opportunity to chop St. Lawrence's deficit to one.
The final period proved to be more of a defensive battle, with both teams having limited high-grade opportunities. St. Lawrence pulled their goaltender with two minutes to go on the clock, but it would back-fire as Schiff corralled the puck and flung it down the ice for the game-sealing empty-net marker.
Cornell netminder
Annelies Bergmann collected 28 saves, and her ninth win between the pipes this year, moving to 9-3-1.Â
