Cornell Opens Home Series With Win Over Penn

ITHACA N.Y. – The Cornell volleyball team (10-5, 4-2 Ivy) beat Penn (9-7, 3-4 Ivy) in four sets Friday night at Newman Arena.

"I'm really proud of the fight we had tonight," Head Coach Trudy Vande Berg said. "After the second set, we talked about not giving Penn so many free points in errors and we did a great job adjusting and keeping the pressure on Penn. Penn is a tough team, they fight hard, they are tough to beat and it's exciting to see how far we've come this year under pressure."

With 66 total team kills on the night, junior setter Doga Ozalp had a career-high 58 assists and 11 digs for a double-double, her fifth of the season.

Eliza Konvicka led the charge with a season-high 23 kills on a .245 hitting percentage. The junior also notched eight digs and five blocks.

Mackenzie Parsons hit for .424 on a career-best 19 kills while also registering a career-best seven blocks and three digs.

Camryn Carlo also added season-best nine kills (.333) and six blocks.

Jackie Baker (14), Sarita Pomar (12), and Trinidy Tien (11) all recorded double-digit digs.

First Set (25-19 Cornell)

Cornell started the first set with a 7-3 lead capped by a block by Konvicka/Carlo.

Penn brought the score within one with an ace from Elsa McDermott, 7-8.

The two teams then traded points evenly until Cornell put together a 4-1 run to make the score 17-13.

The Quakers could not catch up as the Big Red finished out the set with four-straight points that included kills from Jaida Sione and Parsons as well as two blocks from Carlo/Parsons and Konvicka/Parsons.

The Big Red won the first set 25-19.

Second Set (23-25 Penn)

The second set was tied up 14 times with six lead changes.

An 8-2 run early in the set, highlighted by two aces and a solo block from Carlo put Cornell up 13-9 before Penn would string together a 5-1 run to tie the match up 14-14.

Each team would battle till Penn took the final three points to win the set at 25-23.

Third Set (27-25 Cornell)

The Quakers went up early in the third match with a 7-4 lead.

The Big Red responded with four unanswered points to take the lead 8-7.

After a service error from Penn, the Big Red put together another four-point run with a kill and solo block from Parsons and an ace from Pomar, 12-9 Cornell.

The teams tied the set up eight more times all the way up to 25-25.

Konvicka would end the set with back-to-back kills to close out at 27-25 Cornell.

Fourth Set (25-22 Cornell)

Penn once again started hot with a 7-2 run in the final set.

The Big Red chipped at the difference a pair of points at a time to make the score 8-10 with a Carlo/Sione block.

Penn would answer with a 4-0 run before Cornell added three more to the board with two kills from Sione, 11-14 Penn.

With a five-point run, Cornell took the lead for the first time in the set at 21-19.

Penn took the lead one more time at 22-21 before a Carlo kill sparked a final 4-0 run capped by another Parsons kill to take the set at 25-22 and win the match 3-1.
