Volleyball Falls to Princeton in Four Sets

ITHACA N.Y. – The Cornell volleyball team (10-6, 4-3 Ivy) drops their second match of the weekend to Princeton (8-9, 6-2 Ivy) at Newman Arena on Saturday.

Doga Ozalp had another explosive night with 46 assists, nine digs and an ace.

Three Big Red players accounted for double-digit kills. Eliza Konvicka led with 17 kills, three aces and a block assist. Haley Clark and Mackenzie Parsons both totaled 11 over the four sets.

Parsons 11 kills came on a .364 hitting percentage to go with an ace.

First Set (25-21 Cornell)

The beginning of the set was tightly contested until the Big Red went on a 5-1 run sparked by a Jaida Sione kill to take the lead 9-7.

Points were traded evenly back-and-forth until a kill and ace from Parsons created the largest lead of four points in the set for the Big Red, 17-13.

 The Tigers brought it back within two with a pair of kills, 17-15.

Konvicka poured on three more kills in-between Princeton points to finish out the match with a Parsons kill 25-21 Cornell.

Second Set (20-25 Princeton)

Princeton responded with a 6-1 start to the second set.

Cornell had their first 3-0 run of the set with assistance from an Ozalp kill and ace, 9-14 Princeton.

A kill from Meghan Gaffigan brought the Big Red within three, the closest of the set.

Carlo and Parsons added two more kills at the end of the set before the Tigers would take the set 20-25 and tie it up 1-1.

Third Set (21-25 Princeton)

Princeton would start strong once again with a 7-3 lead.

Cornell strung together a 4-1 run capped by an ace from Megan Bickel to bring it within one point, 9-10.

The Big Red tied the set up in the middle at 13-13 with a Konvicka ace and again at 14-14 with a Gaffigan kill.

The teams would trade points until Princeton put together a late three point run to go up 23-19. The Big Red could not recover and dropped the third set 21-25.

Fourth Set (19-25 Princeton)

After errors from the Tigers and a Clark kill, Cornell started the fourth set up 3-2.

Princeton responded with a 9-3 run to take the lead 6-11.

Cornell added three points with Clark and Carlo kills, 9-12.

A kill from Konvicka sparks a late 4-0 run to bring the match back within three at 16-19.

The Tigers also put together a four-point run with two aces, 16-23.

Konvicka and Clark would add two more kills before the Tigers would take the set and match.

Match Notes

Mackenzie Parsons posted her fifth consecutive matches with a hitting percentage over .300.

Doga Ozalp has posted 30 or more assists in six of the last seven matches.

Eliza Konvicka had led the team in kills in the past eight matches.
