NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Cornell volleyball team (11-6, 5-3 Ivy) sweeps Columbia (3-14, 0-8 Ivy) in New York City on Saturday night.
Offensive efforts were dished out between multiple Big Red hitters. Freshman Mackenzie Parsons led the team with 11 kills on a .625 hitting percentage along with six blocks. Jaida Sione was right behind her with 10 kills (.474) and two blocks.
Eliza Konvicka (9), Camryn Carlo (7) and Kohanihokuao Misipeka (5) also got their swings in.
Defensively Megan Bickel and Konvicka dug up six balls each.
The team achieved the best hitting percentage of the season with a .400 over the three sets.
First Set (25-22 Cornell)
The Big Red opened up the match with two Konvicka kills and blocks from Parsons/Doga Ozalp.
The Lions battled to bring the score withing one (5-4) before Cornell started a 4-0 run with three kills from Sione (9-4).
Columbia responded with a 5-1 run of their own to come within one again (10-9).
Cornell added two more points with a block from Konvicka/Carlo to extend the lead to three (12-9).
The middle of the match points were swapped back-and-forth until a kill from Carlo and an ace from Sarita Pomar extended the lead to four (21-17).
Columbia put together three straight points to bring it back within one at 21-20.
Errors from the Lions and another kill from Sione put away the first set at 25-22.
Second Set (25-17 Cornell)
Columbia took the first two points of the set before Cornell put together a 4-0 run capped by Pomar's second ace.
The two teams would battle till a Parsons kill for Cornell tied it up at 8-8 to start a 6-1 run.
A kill from Carlo broke up a Columbia run to continue the lead at 14-12.
Misipeka slammed two consecutive kills to extend the lead to three.
A kill and ace from Konvicka started up the offensive charge at 18-15.
Columbia added one more point at 21-17 before the Big Red took seven of eight of the last points (25-17) to go up 2-0 over the Lions.
Third Set (25-11 Cornell)
A block from Parsons and Ozalp started Cornell's big 9-1 run to start the Big Red up 15-6 in the final set.
Konvicka, Misipeka and Parsons extended the lead to 11 (19-8) through the middle of the set.
The final rally of the match included a block from Parsons/Ozalp, an ace from Konvicka and three kills by Parsons to finish the set 25-11.
