Women’s Tennis Notches 15 Wins at the Big Red Invite

ITHACA, N.Y. — Cornell women's tennis captured 15 wins over three days of competition at the home opening Big Red Invitational. Cornell played matches against Niagara, Le Moyne, Syracuse and Penn State.

On day one, Cornell played two doubles matches and went 2-0. Alexandra Savu and Seychelle Balog defeated Melo and Kotok from Niagara 6-4 and Andrea Martinez and Martina Marica defeated Garcia and Tamang from Niagara 6-1.In singles matches on day one, the Big Red went winless against opponents from Syracuse and Penn State.

On day two of competition, Cornell went 2-1 in doubles. Sage Loudon and Marica defeated Ito and Levivier from Syracuse 6-2, Savu and Martinez defeated Zink and Cegarra from Penn State 6-3 and Tanya Fan and Balog lost to Lasorda and Uchijima from Penn State 6-2. In singles matches, the Big Red went 5-1. Loudon, Savu, Martinez, Balog and Fan all defeated opponents from Le Moyne and Marica fell to an opponent from Syracuse.

On the final day of competition, Cornell went 3-1 in doubles. Loudon and Marica defeated Fernando and Simeonova from Lemoyne 7-6(0), Savu and Balog defeated Casares and Alvarez from Lemoyne 6-1, Fan and Martinez defeated Raiss and Wilson from Lemoyne 6-2 and Loudon and Martinez lost to Shastova and Ito from Syracuse 7-5. In the final round of singles, the Big Red went 3-1. Savu, Martinez and Balog each defeated their Niagara opponents while Marica lost her Niagara match. 

Cornell women's tennis as a whole will now wait for its spring season to start up in late January, but Sage Loudon will compete before that in the ITA Sectionals starting on November 7.
