The Big Red Claim 27 Wins at the Cissie Leary Tournament

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Cornell women's tennis captured 27 wins over three days of competition at the Cissie Leary Invitational. The Big Red played matches against Drexel, University of Delaware, Temple, St. Joseph's, UConn and Ivy League opponent, Penn.

The Big Red went 27-12 overall on the weekend going 8-8 on day one, 11-2 day two and 8-2 on day three.

Day One:

On day one of the tournament, Cornell began by facing Drexel in doubles matches and went 4-0. Jenny Wong and Sage Loudon took their match 7-8 with a tiebreaker of 2-7, Alexandra Savu and Michelle Ryndin as well as Emma Baker and Victoria Zhao defeated their opponents 8-6 and Seychelle Balog and Andrea Martinez won their match 8-2.

The Big Red then had a second set of doubles matches, this time against the University of Delaware where Cornell went 2-2. Savu and Ryndin took their match 8-5 and Baker and Zhao defeated their opponents 7-8 with a tiebreaker of 1-7. Wong and Loudon lost their match 4-8 and Balog and Martinez lost 8-4.

Moving on to the singles matches of day one, Cornell went 2-6 against University of Delaware. Ryndin was one of the wins on the day as she defeated her Delaware opponent in two sets both going 6-4. Zhao was the other singles victory of the day as she won her match in two sets (6-0 and 7-5). Loudon had a long fought singles match that went three sets, the first of which went into a tiebreaker, but she was unable to come out with the win. Balog and Martinez also lost in three hard fought sets. Marica, Savu and Wong all lost in two sets.

Cornell left day one even with an overall record of 8-8.

Day Two:

On day two, the Big Red began by facing Temple University in doubles. Cornell split the matches going 2-2. Savu and Ryndin won their doubles match 8-4 and Balog and Martinez also came away with a win 8-5. Wong and Loudon as well as Baker and Zhao lost their matches 5-8.

The Big Red then had another set of doubles matches against Drexel where they swept their opponent once again 4-0. Wong and Loudon won their match 8-3, Savu and Ryndin took theirs 8-7 with a 3-7 tiebreaker, Baker and Zhao won 8-2 and Balog and Martinez finished off the sweep winning 8-4.

Cornell then moved on to the singles matches of day two where they faced Drexel and went 5-2. Loudon had another hard fought victory as she won in three sets (6-4, 1-6, 6-3), Zhao only played one set against her opponent and won 5-2, Martinez won in two sets (6-2, 6-2), Savu took a win in two sets (6-1, 6-4) and Balog ended the day off with a win in two sets (6-0, 6-2). Rydin and Wong both dropped their matches in two sets.

Cornell left day two with an overall tournament record of 19-10.

Day Three:

On day three, the Big Red faced St. Joseph's in doubles and went 3-0. Ryndin and Zhao and Savu and Loudon both defeated their opponents 8-3 and Baker and Balog won their match with a dominant score of 8-1.

Cornell then moved onto singles matches against St. Joe's where the Big Red went 3-1. Martinez began the singles matches with a win as she defeated her opponent in two sets (6-2, 6-1). Savu then dropped her match in a three set battle (6-2, 2-6, 10-6). Balog was up next and she took her match to three sets but came out with the victory (1-6, 6-4, 10-6) and finally, Marica won her match in two sets with the first set needing a tiebreaker (7-6(4), 6-1). 

To end off the tournament, Cornell had to face off against the University of Connecticut in three singles matches where the Big Red went 2-1. Loudon won her match in two sets both going 6-3 and Zhao took her singles match in two sets (6-2, 6-1). Wong ended the tournament by dropping her singles match in two sets (1-6, 4-6).

Overall, Cornell went 27-12 in the tournament. The Big Red will return to the courts on October 10th for the Regional Championships at Harvard University.
