Emily Garner Picks Up First Home Win in Women's Hoops Victory Over Binghamton

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell head coach Emily Garner picked up her first home win as the Big Red pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 68-51 victory over Binghamton on Thursday evening at Newman Arena. With the result, both teams have moved to 2-2 on the season.

After falling behind early in the second half, the Big Red opened the fourth quarter on a 13-0 run and held the Bearcats scoreless over the first 7:16 of the fourth to secure its first home victory of the season.

Garner's Big Red team put on a passing clinic in this game, assisting on 24 of its 28 baskets, matching the fourth-best single-game total in school history. Emily Pape was the recipient of a number of the assists as she led the team in scoring with 24 points and notched seven rebounds and three steals. Summer Parker-Hall scored 15 points with nine rebounds as the only other Cornell player to reach double figures in this game.

FIRST QUARTER

  • Cornell started off the game with Clarke Jackson making 1-of-2 foul shots and Emily Pape making a jumper to put them up 3-0. 
  • The teams traded points back and forth until Cornell went on a 12-point run to end the quarter up 19-6.

SECOND QUARTER

  • Goode opened up the second quarter of scoring with a layup o make the score 19-8.
  • Azareya Kilgoe responded with a layup of her own.
  • Binghamton then went on a five-point run to bring the score to 21-13 in favor of Cornell.
  • Paige Engels hit a three-pointer to extend Cornell's lead to 11.
  • The remainder of the quarter was filled with the teams trading points, ending with a 30-22 halftime score in favor of Cornell.

THIRD QUARTER

  • Summer Parker-Hall opened up third quarter scoring for Cornell with a layup to extend the Big Red's lead to 10. 
  • Pape followed up with a jumper, which was immediately answered by a Yanniah Boyd layup, bringing Binghamton's deficit to 10 once again.
  • Pape hit a layup to make the score 36-24.
  • Binghamton then went on an eight-point run to make it a four-point game. 
  • The teams traded points once again until Binghamton went on a seven-point run taking the lead 41-40 with under three minutes left in the third quarter.
  • Pape hit a jump shot to regain the lead for Cornell, but Leah Middleton answered pushing the pin back in Binghamton's favor 43-42.
  • Cornell ended the third quarter on a six-point run which put them in the lead 48-43 at the end of the third quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • Cornell opened fourth quarter scoring with a 13-point run putting the Big Red up 61-43 with under four minutes left in the game.
  • Binghamton answered with a six-point run bringing the score to 61-49 in favor of Cornell.
  • Engels broke the Bearcats run with a layup and an and-one to put Cornell up 64-49.
  • Binghamton was fouled and Kaylee Krysztof made both of her free throws.
  • Cornell answered with a jumper from Jackson and two made free-throws from Kilgoe to end the game in a Cornell victory 68-51.

The Big Red remains home to square off with Bryant on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 6:30 p.m. at Newman Arena in Bartels Hall. Cornell leads the all-time series between the programs 3-0, including a 70-62 victory the last time the teams met on Nov. 15, 2015 in Smithfield, R.I.
