Volleyball Falls to Brown in Five But Clinches First Trip to Ivy League Tournament

ITHACA, N.Y. – Despite loss to Brown (10-13, 7-6 Ivy) the Cornell volleyball team (13-9, 7-6 Ivy) clinched its first trip to the Ivy League Tournament.

On a record night for Cornell three hitters had marks in the double-digits with Eliza Konvicka at the lead with 24 kills on a .346 hitting percentage, one shy of her career-best, four digs, two blocks and an ace.

Jaida Sione totaled a season-best 12 kills, two blocks and two digs as Camryn Carlo added to the attack with 11 kills on team best .417 hitting percentage and five blocks.

Freshmen Mackenzie Parsons added 9 kills on a .381% with Kohanihokuao Misipeka rounding out the offense with seven of her own.

The Big Red totaled 64 kills over the five sets with 54 assists coming from junior setter Doga Ozalp.

Libero Sarita Pomar dug up a season-best 17 digs while adding five assists.

First Set (23-25 Brown)

Brown started a tight first set with an 8-4 lead.

Cornell shortened the lead with two Sione kills and an ace from Parsons to come within one point, 7-8.

Konvicka's second kill of the night tied the set up at 10-10 before each team started lead swapping.

The next six points went back and forth till Cornell put together a 5-1 run to take the lead at 17-14.

The Bears then put up four unanswered points to go up by one, 18-17.

Sione and Carlo added three combined kills to take the lead back at 21-18.

Brown strung together five consecutive points, 23-21.

Konvicka added two more kills before Brown took the opening set 23-25.

Second Set (25-11 Cornell)

Cornell bounced back in the second set with a 13-4 start that included kills from Sione, Konvicka and Carlo alongside back-to-back blocks from Carlo/Misipeka and Carlo/Konvicka and capped by an ace from Megan Bickel.

Brown added four points in the middle of the set to chip at the Cornell lead, 21-11.

The deficit was two large for the Bears as Carlo added a final kill to end the set 25-11.

Third Set (25-16 Cornell)

The beginning of the third set stayed knotted up till 11-10 with Cornell leading.

A service error from the Bears started a six-point run for the Big Red that featured three Konvicka kills and an ace from Ozalp.

Cornell would put together one more three-point run sparked by a Parsons kill before the final six points were traded and Cornell took the set 25-16.

Fourth Set (21-25 Brown)

The lead of the fourth set changed seven times with eight tie-ups.

The Big Red took the lead for the first time at 2-1 with a kill and ace from Parsons.

Cornell's first run came at 7-8, the Big Red added four straight points with a kill from Parsons followed by back-to-back aces from Jackie Baker and a block from Sione/Parsons to take the lead back 10-8.

Brown then added a 7-2 run of their own before three Konvicka kills helped Cornell hold onto a one-point lead, 16-15.

The Bears responded with five consecutive points to take a four-point lead, 16-20.

The final 10 points were traded evenly as Brown took the set 21-25.

Fifth Set (11-15 Brown)

Cornell started the final set with a 5-2 lead.

Brown then took the lead after a 4-0 run at 5-6.

Cornell tied it up three more times before the Bears put up three more points to extend their lead, 8-11.

Carlo and Misipeka added two more kills before Brown scored the final three points to win the set 11-15 and take the match.

  • Cornell Volleyball has made its first Ivy League Tournament since it changed to a four-team tournament in 2022.
  • The Big Red out hit Brown 64-56 on a .291 team hitting percentage.
  • Eliza Konvicka was on kill shy of her career-best mark of 25 (Niagara, 2023) with 24 kills over the five sets.
  • Eliza Konvicka surpassed Jen Drais '93 to take the seventh slot in career kills (860).
  • Eliza Konvicka surpassed Shelly Zierhut '93 to take the eighth slot in total career points (1026.5).

Cornell will have one final game of the season in Newman Arena as they host Yale tomorrow night for Senior Night. The match will start at 6 p.m. with Senior Recognition directly after the game.

The Big Red will make its first appearance in the Ivy League Tournament on Nov. 22-23 with site to still be determined.
