ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell volleyball team (12-7, 6-4 Ivy) defeated Dartmouth (10-10, 3-7 Ivy) for the second time this season when it topped the Big Green 3-1 on Saturday night at Newman Arena.
"I'm so proud of our team and how we responded tonight after a rocky match vs. Harvard," head coach Trudy Vande Berg stated. "The team really shifted its mentality coming into the match today. They brought energy and focused on controlling what we can control. Many made big plays for us when we needed them and we stayed aggressive in the serve and passbattle, something that we talk about often.
Two Cornellians finished in double-digits attacking paced by Eliza Konvicka with 17 kills, six digs, three aces and two block assists.
Mackenzie Parsons also ended in the doubles with 15 kills, nine digs, and four blocks.
Doga Ozalp dished out 41 assists, 13 digs and an ace to mark her fifth double-double of the season.
First Set (25-22 Cornell)
After opening kill from Konvicka, both teams traded points evenly till Dartmouth took the lead at 8-10.
Cornell then responded with a 6-1 run that was started by a kill from Kohanihokuao Misipeka and was capped with an ace from Konvicka to take the lead back at 16-13.
Two more kills from Konvicka and an ace from Sarita Pomar extends Cornell's lead by six, 22-17.
Dartmouth made a late run but Cornell took the first match 25-22.
Second Set (26-24 Cornell)
Cornell commenced the set with a 8-5 lead early in the set.
Dartmouth then responded with five straight unanswered points to take the lead 8-10.
Camryn Carlo added a kill and block on top of Pomar's second ace of the set to go up by one point, 12-11.
The middle of the match was tied up six different times before the Big Red put together three points (19-17) with a kill from Parsons and an ace from Jackie Baker.
The Big Green made a 4-0 run to reach match point, 23-24.
Konvicka and Parsons smashed down two kills before Pomar put away the set with her third ace of the set.
Cornell won the set with extra efforts 26-24.
Third Set (22-25 Dartmouth)
Cornell started the third stanza with five straight points.
Dartmouth tied it up at 9-9 after a six-point run.
The two teams tied it up six more times before extending their lead to four at 22-18.
Cornell put together three more points with kills from Konvicka and Parsons to bring it within one (21-22).
Dartmouth took the third set 25-22.
Fourth Set (25-11 Cornell)
Cornell started the final set with an 8-5 lead after another Misipeka kill.
The Big Red continued to pull away, after a kill from Meghan Gaffigan forced Dartmouth into a timeout.
Back-to-back-to-back blocks from Parsons/Misipeka and Parsons/Konvicka brought the match to 18-9.
Dartmouth added their last two points as Cornell added the last seven points that included kills from Parsons, Misipeka, and Joy Liu to finish out the set at 25-11.
