Men's Swim and Dive Downs Penn For First Time In 10 Years, Drops Meet To Princeton

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Cornell men's swimming and diving team defeated the Pennsylvania Quakers for the first time in 10 years, and fell to the Princeton Tigers this weekend at Drexel Pool. The Big Red defeated Penn 158-142. Princeton downed Cornell 163-137.

The Big Red earned 12 top-three overall finishers on the weekend. Pietro Ubertalli claimed first-place in the 200 yard freestyle with his finish of 1:37.03. Blake Conway earned the top-spot in the 100 yard backstroke (48.01 seconds). Joesph Gurski swam in 47.05 seconds to take first in the 100 yard butterfly.

Ubertalli, Sebastian Wolff, Gurski, and Josh Toothman teamed up in the 200 medley relay, racing to a time of 1:28.23 to clinch a second-place result. Julian Correa was the runner-up in the 1000 freestyle (9:05.32). Gurski notched a second-place completion in the 200 butterfly (1:44.74). Domenic Edwards was second-overall in the 100 yard freestyle, earning a 44.74-second time. Ubertalli owned the second-best 200 yard backstroke (1:43.95). In the 500 yard freestyle, Alex Miao ranked second (4:28.00). Ubertalli, Will Taner, Edwards, and Miao produced the second best time in the 400 freestyle relay (2:58.35).

Miao (200 freestyle - 1:37.39), Toothman (50 freestyle - 20.44 seconds), Soodong Kim (1 meter dive - 285.45 points), Blake Conway (200 backstroke - 1:46.99), and a 400 fyard freestyle relay group of Gurski, Toothman, Grove, and Daniel Simoes (3:00.13), claimed third-place results overall in their respective events.

- Ubertalli earned the win over Penn and Princeton in the 200 Free
- Edwards collected the victory against Penn in the 100 Free
- Conway earned the victory over Penn and Princeton in the 100 Backstroke
- Cornell finished first and second against Penn in the 400 Free Relay

"The pool deck and the stands were full and it was an amazing atmosphere. Our men finished first and second against Penn to take the win. It's our first time beating Penn in 10 years, so it was a great day, and especially tough doing it on the road", Wes Newman, the Philip H. Bartels '71 Head Coach of Men's Swimming mentioned.

"The team was tough all day long and earned the win yesterday. It was a great meet and I'm proud of how our boys supported each other from beginning to end.  It was a true team effort", Newman concluded with.
