Volleyball Puts Away Penn On The Road, 3-1

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Cornell volleyball team rallied after dropping the first set at Penn on the Quakers' Senior Day, finishing strong and putting itself in position to qualify for its first Ivy League Tournament appearance with a 3-1 triumph on Saturday evening at the Palestra. Cornell earned the 19-25, 25-13, 26-24, 25-18 triumph to improve to 13-8 (7-5 Ivy). Penn slipped to 11-10 (5-7 Ivy).

A dominant second set, a furious rally in the third and a steady, controlling fourth allowed the Big Red to capture a victory that kept the Big Red in third place in the Ivy standings heading into the regular season's final weekend.

Mackenzie Parsons had 18 kills on 31 swings just a single error, hitting .548 as Cornell posted a .296 hitting percentage as a team in the win. Parsons was involved in half of the team's 12 blocks on the night. Eliza Konvicka was credited with 16 kills, eight digs and six block assists, while Camryn Carlo, Jaida Sione and Kohanihokuao Misipeka each had seven kills. Doga Ozalp posted 43 assists and nine digs, with Sarita Pomar and Megan Bickel each posted 10 digs.

For the Quakers, Adell Murray and Ella Green had 10 kills apiece with Adell adding five blocks. Jenniya Lane was credited with five service aces and Emery Moore posted four kills, 34 assists and eight digs in the defeat. Penn hit .171 for the match.

First Set (25-19 Penn)
• Neither team led by more than two points until Penn scored three straight to go up 14-10.
• The Quakers upped its lead to 19-12 as part of an extended 8-2 run highlighted by a pair of kills by Adell Murray.
• Cornell tried to scratch back with three consecutive points on a kill by Misipeka, an ace by Jackie Baker and put away by Sione before Kaya Johnson's fourth kill of the set ended it.
• Penn hit .229 in the set while limiting the Big Red to .156 hitting.

Second Set (25-13 Cornell)
• Cornell carried the late momentum from the first into the second set, scoring the first six points.
• Penn answered with five consecutive after a timeout to get within one, and eventually took an 8-7 edge after a Murray kill.
• A Penn service error and a Big Red service ace put the visitors back in the lead.
• Cornell outscored the home team 14-3 the rest of the way, with Konvicka putting away three kills over than span.
• A big block in tandem by Parsons and Konvicka ended the set and sent the Big Red into the break.
• Konvicka had five kills and Carlo put away all four swings she attempted in the set, while the Quakers hit -.030 with the Big Red registering five team blocks.

Third Set (26-24 Cornell)
• Penn took control late in the third after trailing 19-17, going on a 7-2 run to hit set point with a 24-21 edge.
• Cornell called timeout down two, and after surrendering a point, began the rally.
• Konvicka got it started with a kill, followed by another by Misipeka.
• A block by Konvicka and Parsons tied the set at 24-24.
• After Parsons put Cornell back in front, she then joined Konvicka in putting down a Penn attack for the team's second block of the set and a 2-1 lead. 
• Parsons was outstanding in the set, putting down eight kills on nine swings for a .889 hit percentage. 
• Cornell hit .387 as a unit with 17 kills in the set.

Fourth Set (25-18 Cornell)
• Penn raced out to an 11-6 edge in the fourth, but the Big Red evened the score at 11-11, took the lead for good at 17-16 and closed out the win.
• The Quakers tried to take a pair of timeouts within three points to stem the momentum late, but closed out on a 9-2 run.
• Parsons added six kills in the fourth on .600 hitting as the Big Red hit .382.
