Harvard Uses Second Half to Pull Away, Downs Women's Basketball

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- A sharpshooting second quarter and strong start to the third that cut the Cornell deficit to three on two occasions was not enough for the Big Red, as Cornell fell to Harvard, 74-51, in Lavietes Pavillion on Friday night. Cornell dropped to 7-14 (1-8 Ivy), while the Crimson improved to 14-8 (7-2 Ivy).

No Big Red player was able to hit double-figure scoring, but Rachel Kaus let the team with nine points on a 4-of-9 shooting performance. Azareya Kilgoe, Emily Pape, and Vivienne Knee each grabbed a team-high four rebounds. Kilgo and Kaya Ingram dished a team-high three assists each, while Knee and Clarke Jackson each tallied two steals.

The Crimson offense was led by Harmoni Turner, who tallied 19 points off of a 9-of-18 shooting day. Turner grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds and led Harvard in assists with five. Katie Krupa followed with 16 points and Abigail Wright rounded out the double-digit scorers with 13. Saniyah Glenn tallied a perfect shooting day, counting for seven points in addition to grabbing nine rebounds.

Harvard started the game with a 9-2 run, prompting a timeout from the Rebecca Quinn Morgan '60 Head Coach of Women's Basketball, Dayna Smith, and Cornell responded with a 6-4 stretch, but a late three-pointer gave the Crimson a 16-8 lead after one quarter.

The second quarter began with a Harvard three-pointer, but Cornell used the next 2:35 to tally a 10-4 run that included two Big Red three-pointers, which came on back-to-back possessions from Knee and Emily Pape. A timeout was called by Harvard Head Coach Carrie Moore at 7:20, but it did little to slow the Cornell defensive momentum as the Big Red allowed just two points over the next 3:38 of play. A three-point-play on a converted layup and-one helped the Crimson right the ship to bring its lead to 31-21 as halftime approached. A final second three by Emily Pape kept the Big Red within striking distance, cutting the halftime deficit to seven.

Cornell opened the second half on a 4-0 run before a deep two from Turner got Harvard on the boards. A three-ball from Azareya Kilgoe cut the deficit to three with 6:47 left in the third but back-to-back layups from the Crimson stretched the lead back to seven for Harvard. The Crimson built its lead over the remainder of the quarter to take a 21-point advantage into the fourth.

Harvard closed the fourth quarter with the same momentum as the third, putting away the 23-point victory.
