Rutgers Comes Back to Down Women's Tennis

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell women's tennis held a 3-1 advantage over Rutgers before the Scarlett Knights took the last three singles matches to steal the 4-3 victory from the Big Red. With the loss, Cornell falls to 2-5, while Rutgers improves to 5-2.

The day opened with doubles play. Rutgers grabbed the first win in the No. 2 match, where Kim Minchae and Mai Nguyen beat Michelle Ryndin and Alexandra Savu, 6-2. Jenny Wong and Victoria Zhao had the answer with a 6-3 win over Noami Karki and Arina Valitova. Emma Baker and Lauren Stien battled in the final match, securing a 7-6 (7-2) victory over Tara Chilton and Yana Gurevich, securing the doubles point for the Big Red.

Lauren Stien grabbed the win over Tara Chilton, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, to open singles competition. Victoria Zhao then fell to Kim Minchae, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, to cut Cornells lead to 2-1, but Michelle Ryndin righted the ship in the No. 2 match with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory. Rutgers rallied to take the final three matches. Naomi Karki beat Tanya Fan ion the No. 6 match, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, followed by Jackeline Lopez, who bested Emma Baker, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. Mai Nguyen finished off the victory for the Scarlett Knights with a 7-6, 6-2, 6-4, win over Jenny Wong in the No. 4 match.

Cornell is back in action tomorrow when the team faces off against Boston College at 10 a.m. and Marist at 4 p.m. in a Sunday double-header. Matches will be played in the Reis Tennis Center.
