Women's Tennis Finishes Three-Match Weekend With Win Over Marist

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell women's tennis split matches this Sunday, falling to Boston College, 4-3, in the morning match but went on to defeat Marist, 6-1, in the evening match. Cornell moves to 3-6 on the season, while Boston College improved to 4-3 and Marist fell to 2-8.

The match against BC came down to the wire, with Boston College emerging with the win. Cornell started the match by winning the doubles point for its third consecutive match. Jenny Wong and Victoria Zhao fell in the No. 3 match to Nada Dimovska and Muskan Mahajan, giving the Eagles the early advantage. Lauren Stien and Emma Baker beat Marice Aguiar and Tola Glowacka, 6-3, in the No. 1 match to force a point-deciding match in the No. 2. Alexandra Savu and Michelle Ryndin prevailed, beating Seren Agar and Stephanie Sanchez, 6-4, to secure the point for Cornell.

In singles play, Boston College's Natalie Eordekian beat Emma Baker in the No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-3, to level the match at one point apiece. The Eagles took the lead when Seren Agar beat Tanya Fan 7-5, 6-3, in the No. 6 match. Gia Graziano and Michelle Ryndin won their matches to retake the Cornell lead at 3-2, but Boston College rallied, winning the No. 1 and No. 4 matches to seal the victory.

Against Marist, Cornell posted a near-perfect match, winning 6-1 with the only loss coming in a retirement. Jenny Wong and Victoria Zhao defeated Akanksha Sreenivas and Vihana Shresta, 6-1, in the No. 3 match. Savu and Ryndin followed with a 6-0 sweep over Ellen Zureick and Isabella Tonuzi, while Emma Baker and Lauren Stein took down Caterina Assi and Cloe Clements Sorde, 6-2, in the No. 1 match to leave no doubt.

Gia Graziano was forced to retire in the No. 2 singles match, but the Big Red took every other match. Seychelle Balog beat Akanksha Sreenivas in the No. 6 match, 6-1, 6-2 followed by Alexandra Savu beating Ellen Zureick in the No. 3 match, 6-0, 6-1. Martina Marica took the No. 5 match, 6-4, 6-1. Emma Baker bested Caterina Assi in the No. 1 match, 6-1, 6-3. Tanya Fan closed out the day with a thriller, topping Vihana Shresta, 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (11-9).

Cornell is back to the courts next weekend with two road matches. The Big Red first travels to Cincinnati, Ohio to take on Xavier on Saturday, Feb. 24, then head to Bloomington, Ind. to take on Indiana. Matches are set to begin at 2 p.m. and 11 a.m., respectively.
