POTSDAM, N.Y. - The no. 6-ranked Cornell women's ice hockey team took down the no. 4-ranked Clarkson Golden Knights 3-0 at Cheel Arena on Saturday evening. The Big Red improved to 18-6-1, while the Golden Knights dropped their first home game of the year, and move to 25-3-2.
Kaitlin Jockims,
Izzy Daniel, and
Karel Prefontaine registered Big Red goals in the contest.
Georgia Schiff,
Ashley Messier, and
Grace Dwyer logged helpers in the game.
Annelies Bergmann collected 43 saves and her second shutout of the season.
The Big Red and the Golden Knights were closely contested in the first stanza, but Jockims made the difference when she put in a one-timer from deep as she was falling down to the ice. Bergmann was responsible for stopping 14 shots in that period, while Michelle Pasiechnyk registered seven for the Golden Knights.
It would be NCAA points-leader Daniel who extended the Big Red lead to 2-0 early in the second following a Clarkson turnover. The remainder of the second would look similar to the first-period, as both teams stood tall in its respective defensive zone.
Less than one minute into the third period,
Alyssa Regalado was called for an interference penalty, putting the Golden Knights on the woman-advantage. Cornell would stand strong, killing off the power-play.
Clarkson put 17 shots toward the Big Red net in the final stanza all of which were saved by stout Bergmann or blocked by couragous Cornellians. None of which proved more valuable than Dwyer's block at the eight minute-mark which sprung the puck out in front of a gliding Prefontaine who won her breakaway battle with Pasiechnyk to give Cornell a game-sealing insurance-marker.
Bergmann's earned her 14th win between the pipes this season on 43 saves (career-high), to go along with her second shutout of the season.
