Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Prefontaine Strikes In Overtime To Give #6 Big Red 3-2 Game One Quarterfinals Victory Over #9 Quinnipiac

ITHACA, N.Y. - The no. 6-ranked Cornell women's ice hockey team downed the no. 9-ranked Quinnipiac Bobcats 3-2 in overtime at Lynah Rink to take a 1-0 ECAC Hockey quarterfinals series lead. The Big Red improved to 23-6-1 on the year, while the Bobcats dropped to 25-10-1.

Georgia Schiff, Lily Delianedis, and Karel Prefontaine registered Big Red goals in the contest. Kaitlin Jockims, Alyssa Regalado, Izzy Daniel, and Piper Grober had helpers in the game.

The Big Red was furious to the puck in the opening period, seemingly having an extra step on the Bobcats throughout the frame. The shots-on-goal total was even at 12, but the Big Red made two of theirs count.

Schiff got Cornell on the board five minutes in on a heads-up rebound in front of the net. Five minutes later, Daniel sliced through Bobcat defenders and found Delianedis lurking in the slot who extended the lead to two.

Quinnipiac would manage to score two goals of their own in the second frame. The first would come directly off the face off, as the Bobcats would put in their first goal of the contest. The second came when the Bobcats were relentless in front of the net and would eventually sneak one in to bring the game even at 2-2.

The final period went scoreless between the two squads. Toward the end of the period, a couple of sequences from Big Red net-minder Annelies Bergmann saved the game for Cornell. The first of two occurred when the Bobcat skater had three point-blank opportunities in front of the net to no avail. The second came with 28 seconds remaining when Steigauf had a point-blank attempt that was denied by Bergmann, sending the game to overtime.

The Big Red had its work cut out for them as they would begin the extra-period on a skater down when Grace Dwyer was called for a hook-infraction. The Cornell penalty-kill stood strong for the fifth time in the contest. Seconds later, Quinnipiac goaltender Logan Angers made the critical mistake of leaving the crease, and Prefontaine took advantage on a one-timer from a tough angle that squeezed its way between the pipes for the game-winner.

Bergmann collected 31 saves in the game, earning the first post-season victory of her career. She moved to 18-6-1 between the pipes on the year.
