ITHACA, N.Y. -- Seven members of the Cornell fencing team were announced as members of 2024 All-Northeast All-Region team, announced by the United States Fencing Coaches Association on Thursday morning. The number of honorees for the Big Red bests the team's four recipients from last season.
Starting with epee, three Big Red fencers appeared on the team. Sophomore Ketki Ketkar leads the charge with her first career first-team selection. Ketkar becomes the first Cornell representative to earn a first-team distinction over either of the three weapons since Madeleine Nishimura earned first-team honors on the foil team in 2020. Ketkar is coming off a stellar debut at the 2024 NCAA Northeast Regional Championships, taking first out of 54 competitors with a combined 19-4 record over three rounds alongside a 45-touch differential. She excelled in the final round of 12, going 9-2 with a +19 touch difference to finish four touches ahead of Columbia's Mina Yamanaka to take gold. Clarice Lim and Nora Weber also earned honorable mention honors as the senior and sophomore reached the third round of regionals with the weapon, finishing 15th and 18th overall.
Shifting to foil, Renata Chusid is the lone representative, earning a spot on the All-Region list for the second time in her Big Red career. The junior battled through a tough draw throughout regionals, fencing her way out of round one with a 3-1 record and a +12 touch difference to move into round two. Chusid would eventually make it into the third round of the foil division, finishing just two spots shy of advancing to the final round of 12.
The final three members of the team were scattered throughout sabre in Keona Moya (second team), Isabela Carvalho (honorable mention), and Sterre Hoogendoorn (honorable mention). Moya ran the table in the sabre division, fencing her way out of the first round before eventually making it to the finals for the first time in her Cornell career. The senior finished sixth overall in sabre with a 6-5 record and a -2 touch difference in the final round-robin. Overall, Moya posted a 16-11 record and a +18 touch differential over the four rounds. Carvalho finds herself on the All-Region list for the first time in her Cornell career after also making the finals in sabre, finishing 11th overall. Hoogendoorn rounds out the honorees with her first distinction on the team after advancing to the second round last Sunday in Brookville.
Since 2020, Cornell has had 21 fencers earn USFCA All-Region honors. This year's selections are the most the Big Red has had since having six appear on the list in 2022.
Three Big Red fencers (Stella Berman, Carvalho, Ketkar) will represent the Big Red in next week's NC Fencing Championships hosted by the Ohio State University beginning Thursday, March 21, from the French Field House.
